with transparent flower pots you could get a really accurate idea of how damp the soil is as well as watching how the root system develops.

no hiding place for those nasty little bugs either.

       we did talk about those classroom experiments before but I cannot find transparent flower pots to purchase. holding my breath before phoenix gets here.

       There are a few, but most would have to be converted from candle holders. [links]
This would make it easier to see if your plants were getting root bound as well.

       Speaking of jelly there is that special nutrient rich stuff that they sell. It looks like bright Blue or Red Clear Gel with a sort of cube like surface. This stuff is always sold in clear pots.
