competitors wearing armour designed more for sound than for protection, and weilding swords designed to whistle through the air [but still strong]

This actually sounds like a fairly cool performance art thing... <For the record, the first positive vote was mine>

Looking at the title, I was originally going say "Baked" in Michael Jackson's "Beat It".

No, that was a fight in a musical...

Please, nobody mention that awful "Duelling Banjos" song...

       D'oh!

In "Time of the Hawklords" Hawkwind band members used techno-magical weapons made from special amplifiers playing Hawkind tracks.

Reminds me of those weird drum troops that use garbage can lids and metal thingamajigs strapped all over their bodies to thump and clash out rhythms while dancing. Or strange Oriental monks. Or armoured Capoiera. I can imagine this would be quite a crowd-puller if the competitors were talented enough.

We're Knights of the Round Table
We dance when'er we're able
We do routines & chorus scenes
Our footwork's im-pecc-able
We dine well here in Camelot
We eat ham and jam and spamalot.

My local Boy Scout troop takes an annual trip to a camp called Old Indian. On Wednesday night they have parent's night, and we all go to an amphitheater where the counselors dressed in Native American garb and danced to music. One of the dances they did was a fight dance where they actually hit each other with wooden poles. Each hit was punctuated by being on the upbeats and the apart part of the dance was on the downbeats.

Apparently there is an Japanese anime series called Macross 7 in which the Earth uses a band of musicians who fight inter-stellar aliens by playing their musical instruments.

In context with the entire Macross saga, that actually makes a lot of sense.

None of these musicians are called Lemmy or Brock are they, by any chance?

Morris dancing involves bells and hitting each other with sticks. It is of course England's great contribution to world culture. Germans also hit each other in folk dancing, but prefer to use the flat palm and leather shorts to absorb some of the impact; such cowardice explains how they lost 2 world wars.
