As [not Morrison rm] annotates, a laser rangefinder
cellphone app is troubled by the fact that most
cellphones dont have the needed built-in hardware
a laser. They all do, however, have speakers and
microphones, so should be capable of running an
acoustic rangefinder. OLPC XO-1 laptops came with
such an app. Acoustic rangefinders have much
shorter range than laser rangefinders, though. |

Personally, I'd sooner have an IR LED on my
smartphone than a laser, with apps to duplicate
various remotes. I have a Re remote plug-on for my
iPhone, but it's a cumbersome alternative to a
simple IR LED. |

Smart phones have GPS, so distance between two should be determinable to plus/minus a couple of meters. Is the laser idea to do better than that? If so, need to specify precisely how it would work. [withholding+] |

I think the Apple Newton had an IR diode ... you could teach it to emulate any IR remote control. |

How about a smart-phone which fires very small rockets? |

Simply fire one of the small rockets (with a teeny black-powder+magnesium warhead) at the distant object/person, compare the impact flash/sound of small explosion to get the distance. |

Can be done in Android, iPhone or Katyusha (for the prolific measurer). |
