fishy house of fun

a tank of mirrors

(+1, -1)

suspend wide mirrored strips dangling downwards from wires anchored horizontally at the top of your fishtank.

transform your small boring tank for your pet fish into one huge maze and multiply their apparent living space.

to the casual viewer, fish would swim into a strip and appear to disappear, quite surreally / sliced into 2 by some unseen guillotine. some fishy friends would appear from nowhere.

at times, when the water is still – a kaleidoscope of fishy noses peeping around corners and fishy tails appearing almost alarmingly

I have a couple of goldfish in a vase - let you know if I get around to trying it!

For my next trick, I'm going to need a fish from the audience. +

I'm not sure how fish eyes work, but I wonder how this would look to them, through the water? It would certainly look great from outside the tank though.

       This so needs a drawing.

wagster, please do! & welcome to hb.
Fr, neither do I but I want to know now.
2fries, hmmmm - may I prevail on Farmer? he would do it justice, I am sure.

Can you tell an insane fish apart from a sane one? What would it do? Swim in circles, leave poop haning out of its rear, and occasionally try to jump out of the tank?
luecke, Jun 10 2004

with these free dangling mirrors, the fish will not even notice. just miles and miles (or the nautical equivalent) of new horizons. willy never had it so good!

oh 2fries that is so cute! thank you.

The fish wouldn't go mad, [MrCutieFinster], as human beings we rely on our eyesight much more than any other creature. Animals tend to collect data from all their senses to understand their surroundings. There would be no other input for the fish from the mirror other than visual. The illusion would be incomplete, it would be equivalent to a badly drawn picture. To test this you could try putting a cat in a hall of mirrors and watching it's reaction.

<imagines goldfish smoothing down scales, combing fins, and putting on makeup everytime they pass a mirror>

Whoops, missed this one. Nice 2 fries, you've outdone myself.

       Glad you like it [po].
[FarmerJohn} I hope mine doesn't keep you from doing one, and if po gets one up there I think this would be the most illustrated idea here :)
