If Coronavirus makes the idea of tens of thousands of athletes, fans and officials getting together for a few weeks in Tokyo a bad idea, hold a distributed Olympics in which athletes compete under competition conditions in their home countries, at the same time, and submit their score and video evidence
for centralised judging.
Distributed Olympics

Ha - how's that going to work? (imagines single basketball teams playing against VR images of opposition etc) |
Misses rubbing shoulders with the best to bring out the best. |
But currently science and technology is not fast enough to stop nature putting a foot down. |
No, but anyway, why worry ? What's all the fuss ? |
It's not Ebola. There aren't mass fatalities. Most cases are manageable ... being serum positive for the coronavirus strain isn't a death sentence. It's nowhere near as dangerous as the 1918-19 flu pandemic. And there are billions of humans on this planet, a few less will do no harm. |
It's an evolutionary selection pressure. Think of it as "weeding out" (although that's not reassuring of you're one of those destined for the compost heap). |
Hmmmm, "Immune system Olympics" ... |
Humans vs. pathogens. Only the ones with the toughest immune systems survive. |
Winners get a gold medal but have to donate blood and DNA samples to researchers. |
Losers get a respectful sendoff (including cremation). |
//No, but anyway, why worry ? What's all the fuss ?// - actually, I'm more interested in the idea of distributed sporting events than in the prevention of Coronavirus... |
But doesn't that already happen ? |
Sporting events at local, national and international level are Baked and WKTE. |
What if you distributed a synchronised swimming team? |
Ooh, I know; for weight-lifting, keep all the weights in the same
place, but make the contestants pull on really long pulleys. |
Synchronised swimming would be made more interesting with each swimmer being in a different country, their performances being combined on-screen when the event is broadcast. |
There are so many events that wouldn't be possible, it's hard to know where to start, but let's begin with golf, then go on to tennis, judo, boxing, hockey, volleyball, fencing, wrestling, taekwondo, rugby, football. In other words all of the team sports are gone. People need to be in one place at the same time for many reasons. |
"The second wave of the 1918 pandemic was much deadlier than the first. The first wave had resembled typical flu epidemics..." |
Speaking of the Olympics, if surfing isn't one of the events, it should be. Distributed, it would favor locations with bigger waves. |
//all of the team sports are gone// Yes, but team sports
don't generally belong in the Olympics, with a very few
exceptions like relay races. Olympic football is just silly. |
That statement implies the existence of "football* which is not silly" - clearly a ludicrous concept. |
// Distributed, it would favor locations with bigger waves. // |
That would hardly qualify as a level playing field ... |
*We presume the game referred to is "Association Football". |
Could you pull this off with an Xbox? |
