¡Feliz Navidad!

A christmas letter for you [Marked for affection]

December has finally arrived. Our cotidianity is redefined and, for the first time in a year, things feel calm, silent again. It's the strange lethargy derived from those times in which our melancolic, happy and hurtful recollections of the last eleven months cut all our wounds open again, one last time, before they're all healed together in synchrony as the year dies and leaves it all behind.

It's December and within our bodies something craves for the cold, to endure it, to enjoy it, to wear layers just to have every piece of clothing remind us of the dull, gray view outside and finally have an excuse to dress all the buildings and streets of the city with the lights that we look for inside ourselves.

Even the green and red sparkles of the traffic lights exhale a feeling of festivity, as if everything had been designed to celebrate the christmas holidays. "Free association", Freud called it. Everything can be perceived in any way we please, what's good and what's bad, what's new and what's ancient. Christmas has invaded us people, it's getting into us, like each year, through the noses, the ears, the pockets; all in behalf of the yearly massive birthday celebration of the most disinterested human being that has set foot on this planet.

What I have to say is very simple. Most of you have heard about my religious preferences, and as the good agnostic I am, the fact that the son of God was born on December 25 sounds fishy. This doesn't mean that I don't care about christmas, since the feelings that blossom to surround this event are very valuable and, if we're honest, it's the only time of the year when people stop being the every day bastard to become the good samaritan who forgets old grudges, feeds the poor, yields for other cars to go first and talks to God. To me it's simpler than that. It's a good excuse to let the people I love know how much they have enriched my life.

Most of you might not be aware of this, but your "virtual" presence in my life has changed the person I am now. Every point of view, every encouraging word, every bright and possitive idea I read has had an influence in my perspective of things, even improving it and making me want to be a better person.

I'm not sure if there's a "brain", a "spirit" or a hierarchic system of angels, saints and many other celestial corpses behind of what happens to us every day. I rather think that every event that comes across my path contributes to define who I am and where my steps will lead to. You, baker friends, are among those events that shape my life every day and make me who I am today.

I don't know where we will be tomorrow (actually, I don't know if we will be here). I can only thank you because "today" you have made my life happier and richer because through your creativity, your support and even your encouragement you have left a seed that grows inside of me every day, filling my life with moments because, to me, life is nothing but an instant. This one.

Thanks for being here with me, wherever you are and may you and your loved ones find health, love and happiness in your lives next year.

¡Feliz Navidad!

Happy Yule to you too. This is wonderful. And have a heaping helping of universal mana.

Po, what do you mean when you say 'with knobs on?'

She who is adored found me crying earlier this year when Eddie Dobbs posted the stuff about Dr Fowler, who she was and what she did and the story about their life together.
A dear friend of mine died a few weeks ago of an asthma attack. Today would have been her 35th birthday so I'm not at my my most cheerful .
There is so much sorrow and pain in the world that it is good to come to a site like this just to get away from it.
I have discovered so much over the last year from this site, good, bad and some of it quite ugly. It has become one of my favorite ways of waysting time. I wish I could have wrote how I feel about HB as well as Pericles has done.
Peace, love and unity to you all. John

Ah, Pericles. Beautiful thoughts expressed more eloquently in your second language than I could manage in my mother tongue. God jul!

[sufc] - John - I feel for your loss. I lost my mum a few months ago making this my first Christmas without her.

Family, friends and community help you through.

The halfbakery is all of these things to me as many of you will know.

I'll raise a glass to you all. Here's to a better year in 2004.
jonthegeologist, Dec 25 2003

Indeed, po. I'll raise a little hell to you all. Well ... the good kind of hell ... wait a minute. Nevermind. I'm just gonna sit under the Christmas Tree enjoying my foot ... :P
Letsbuildafort, Dec 25 2003

[sufc] and [jon], I feel for your loss too. As I said, we're more prone to melancholy around christmas time and we all miss those who went before us. Just remember that the fact that our five senses are not enough to let us see some things in the way we expect to see them doesn't mean they're not right next to us, just looking through the other side of the glass. That's why I am an agnostic: some things are beyond our comprehension of this thing we call "life".

Enjoy, love, feel, say what you have to say to those you love while we're all still on the same side of the glass. Thanks for all your sweet comments and feliz navidad again.

Treat the Angel that sits upon your tree with care. It watches over you.

A year later, I hold the same feeling. I hope this year you have an excellent Christmas, and may 2005 bring happiness and health to you all.

¡Feliz Navidad y prospero año a vos tambien, [Pericles]! You have a talent for writing beautifully and I always feel better after reading your posts, no matter how mundane the subject.

I missed this first time 'round. Right back atcha Pericles. I'll chuck a snowball in your general direction. The old arm's not what it used to be but if the winds are just right...

Wow - its been more than a year for me. I hope you enjoy your Christmas and brand-spanking-new-car. Err - year.

       Sorry I didn't get you a car.
Letsbuildafort, Dec 06 2004

What a great year 2004 was. My life got categorically better in many, many ways. One of which was that I found this pleasant little corner of the net, met people like [pericles] and all the rest of you and rediscovered a part of my brain that had lain dormant for many years.

See you all in 2005. Oh, who am I kidding... see you tomorrow.
wagster, Dec 06 2004

Thanks Pericles, and everyone else for your kind words. I hope we all continue to enrich one another's lives for many moons to come and wish everyone the best of seasons greetings.
