       Not that they give off more radiation, it's that the cord is supposed to act as an antenna and channel the picked-up power right into your ear, instead of radiating it nearby.   

       I don't buy it, myself, but that's what I've read. Fortunately, I'm not one of the Tragically Connected, and can stand to be out of reach of a phone for more than 30 seconds...
