You have to know the film "Kiss Me Deadly" to understand
the
idea, which is fairly simple, and copied by Tarantino in "Pulp
Fiction". Before you open your laptop you must key in a PIN
number, otherwise you will activate "Kiss Me Deadly".
In this event a ferociously bright light begins to
spill out
from
the increasing wedge shaped gap between the lid and the
base, accompanied by the rising volume of a horrible
undulating sound that resembles the amplified breathing of
a
demonic being.
Lots of links and references to the film, but couldn't find a
really good one.

Is this really an original idea? Sounds like it comes straight from a film, with no real explanation of how to achieve it. (Correct me if you have added something - I haven't seen either film.) |

Dr Curry - Well spotted. It does come straight from the
film, as described. The originality comes from the novelty
of the application. The movie, by the way, is a film noire
classic, and if someone was to manufacture what I have
described it would fly off the shelves and into the hands
of movie buffs, including me.... but having said that I
agree, there's not much invention in it. |

You enter the pin number on a key pad on the outside of
the lap top. Positioning it on the inside would be a bit like
having the key-hole for the safe on the inside of the door.
Dear oh dear, this is basic stuff. Can I not just have a
bone and be done with it? |

Forgive me for being pedantic, but what's new about the idea then? Was it not a laptop in the movie? You might possibly describe what happened in the movie to give this context for those of us who haven't seen it. |

In the movie the case contained nuclear material and everyone was after it. As xenzag says, the idea was lifted slightly in 'Pulp Fiction', where the case contained gold and, before that, in 'Repo Man' where the case was replaced by a car and the objects in the boot (trunk) were the decaying bodies of some dead aliens.
I like the idea (+), but you'll need a supply of dry ice on board in order to get the 'spilling out' effect. |
