I get a kick out of watching the holiday season become more politically correct as saying "Merry Christmas" becomes taboo and is replaced by "Happy Holidays."
A solution for those of us (or just me) who wants to have a generic but original holiday saying is to celebrate the solstice once again.
Like the pagan holiday Christmas was hijacked from we may now give praise to the universe that the daylight hours will soon be getting longer and the cold weather will be going away. We can sing and dance as we revel around the big green "solstice bush" and give "sun gifts" to our friends and enemies. Everything can be so cheerful and happy that we will all get dibetes.
JOYOUS SOLSTICE EVERYONE!
(?) Winter Solstice Celebration
http://www.cultural-center.org/sing.htm Man, that's a funky looking "solstice bush" they decided to substitute for the traditional Christmas tree. [jurist, Dec 17 2005]

And on that note, Happy Solstice! |

Hail to the midswinter sun! |

|
Both Xmas and Easter are fundamentally astronomical events and so eminently suitable for all nature worshippers realists and naturists to celebrate. If only people would keep religion out of it! |
|
|
Xmas Day itself is the day of the rebirth of the sun, i.e. the first noticeable lengthening of days after the still point of the Solstice. |

Well before you know it someone has been sacrificed on an alter and we are right back to religion again. |

First look I thought mylodon wrote "antler". I was what the hell do reindeer have to do with anything? |

^ Probably happens several times a year, the tourist wanting to pet the wild horned beast gets a pointed lesson while onlookers snap action stills. Usually makes a lasting impression. |

"Oh the rising of the sun and the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir!" |
|
|
Now I'm imagining the running of the deer in the snow-bound streets of Pamplona, except Pamplona is now in Finland, and there's a red winter sun, really low in the midday sky. |

Why not just reduce the whole affair to a txt message you get once a year from some automated system that simply sends out the goth kid's universal greeting of 'hey.' |
