Just wanted to give appreciation for the return of the fabled Halfbakery and thank Jutta (once more)for putting up with the hassle entailed.

In many years to come, newbies will be gather round crazy 'ol man [UB] and hear tale of "The Great Crash of Oct' 04"...

Arse! "Small piece of paper with 3 4-digit numbers on it" has gone from being a top ten idea to having no votes at all. Oh well - at least it's there...

       Happy. Thank you, Jutta.
egbert, Oct 04 2004

Do you think jutta would like a fund to be set up to defray the mighty expsense, that she musta rung up, re-doing the place? Anyone speak to her? I've got an extra nickel burning a hole in my pocket!
blissmiss, Oct 04 2004

I'm home! The insurance company sure did a good job of replacing my stuff after the fire. Lost a tortoise or two, but most everything else is there.
Worldgineer, Oct 04 2004

Damn, but it's good to be back. I'm going to have to do that "chink a glass of wine against my monitor" thing again. Here's to the HB, and to Jutta in particular, the Toastmaster General. <clink>. Cheers, all.

Thank you, Jutta. I notice that on my personal list of ideas, you restored a few which had been individually deleted as being inappropriate. I assume you will want to re-delete them.

Thanks again, for hosting such a nice place to go crazy. -- Which reminds me: I have a few hundred kilobytes of new text to post (whole computer programs). Shall I?

Just when my forced return to normalcy looked inevitable, it has been evited. Many thanks!
lurch, Oct 06 2004

And jutta seems to have scraped some old faces from Google's cache as well. May be all these people who haven't been around for a while have been secretly watching the HB for years but not contributing in order to actually get some work done?
goff, Oct 06 2004

       Like me for example.

Good to see the old place back.

The Halfbakery has been clensed by fire, and now the air blows fresh & new like a new Eden. the next troll will slither in on his belly. Unfortunately there's always some newbie or witless baker who takes him up on his challenge. Don't talk to the serpent! [edited]

On my bended knee, I thank thee, O bakesperson, for restoring what passes for my sanity. I hereby, herewith and hereuntofore bestow upon thee the Eternal Order Of The Fluffy Perfectly-Browned Crisp-On-Top French-Style Breakfast Essential, or OEETFPBCOTFSBE for short. Nice one, jutta.

Excellent. Not only have I just got broadband at my place at uni, but the bakery is here as well.

Many thanks jutta. Must have taken a nasty amount of work.
RobertKidney, Oct 07 2004

Yaoman service by Jutta. I think most people are unable to vote becoz of problem in logging in (I just got it rectified by informing to HB). Otherwise by now the score must have been 410 or more instead of 41.
vedarshi, Oct 07 2004

Well, so much for all that spare time I had. Ha. I think I'll wear my hb t-shirt all day today.
bpilot, Oct 07 2004

Since the halfbakery crash, I've worked so hard that I've gotten two raises and a promotion, been nominated for our company's Chairman's Award, helped disabled students learn to read, painted houses for underprivileged children, bought a luxurious mansion with my additional income, met a lovely woman in my free time, got married, adopted three beautiful sons, and am currently running for office as State Assemblyman in a race where I've taken a huge lead.

       ...I'm so glad it's back!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) :) :)
phundug, Oct 07 2004

Pods were everywhere around the crash site. One survivor emerged from a pod. Strands of green cloth and layers of dust, this figure, known to ufologists as the 'ghillie', is one of many specimen occupying the universe known as 'internet'. Quite dangerous around fire, it has a vivid imagination, but lacks the skill to use it.

Er, whatever. AND WE'RE BACK!!!
ghillie, Oct 07 2004

It is good to be back. In my time away I went crazy with work, got burnt out, and spent a lot of time reminiscing about [UnaBubba]’s “I QUIT!” Service. Croissants keep me regular.

The bad news is, my croissants are all gone. The good news is, Weetos are now £1 from Kwik Save.

Was the crash caused by anything cool, like an explosion or something? Or just hardware/software failure, or human error?

hippo, Sep 21 2024

...and then the auto-boner showed up.
Coincidence?

The crash was caused by people overstressing the server by preparing for a potential crash by downloading everything on it. At least that's my recollection...
RayfordSteele, Sep 21 2024

I was hoping this was Zombie [8th] -_-

I never learned 'why' it crashed. I just know that the votes were apparently not recoverable.

Sort of like a best-before date.

hmm. facebook started in 2004, i feel like there's a connection there somewhere. in an alternative universe, buns and bones would have been the basis of peoples careers.
