Five records per Vinyl Movie; one for each of the colours, and two for sound.
The player has five corresponding turntables and needles, so that the intensity of each of the colours can be sent to the television. The stereo sound can be sent electronically or be bellowed from dual trumpets.
Just
think of the crackle as the movie starts, the slightly out-of-sync scenes, and the hilarity when you mix up the yellow and blue discs.

Excellent. Assuming you're thinking of a raster pattern display (don't feel you have to) the discs would need a "start of line" sync pulse on each frame to keep them all in step. I feel that 5 separate players might not work as well as one player with a huge belt driving 5 platters - or 5 stacked platters on a single spindle....
Also, I doubt if a single disc will be long enough for a movie - a movie might be two or three discs long (implying 10 or 15 discs in total) wwhich would echo the breaks in old films for the projectionist to change reels. |
I felt that if there were five seperate players, occasionaly you'd get out of sync colour, emulating damaged films, poisoned by bright light. |
10-to-15 records certainly would make it as thick as an old-style cinema reel, and would be good value-for-money, plus the added bonus that you mentioned. |
Perhaps optional sound records as well, so that surround sound and 5.1 can be incorperated. |
Thirty-Three-And-A-Third. Old school! |
Sp: Skool - for authenticity, getting to change discs frequently (it's a "feature") and higher fps, you'd have to go with 78 rpm. I know a Bluesman who goes through over 300 78 needles a month, so you'd get to stock up on those too - saves the records from excessive wear. |
78's sold with a "free" pack of, say, 30 needles. |
(By free i mean included in the price, of course.) |
shellac rather than vinyl, of course |
Will we be able to region-hack our gramophones (or gramoscopes, I suppose)? |
Why not go all the way? Fight Club in a 2-wax cylinder box-set! The Aliens Special edition zoetrope! The Godfather trilogy flick book! |
It's novel, non-obvious, and (arguably) useful - apply for a patent immediately! |

I recently bought the 'complete and uncut' DVD version of 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World'. Imagine my surprise and, I must confess, delight when I discovered that 'uncut' meant that the 10 minute Interlude was also included.

Would you need 5 records? Stereo records exist, holding two data tracks, so why not have a stereo pickup for the audio *and* a quadrophonic pickup for RGB +sync? |
Making the turntables coaxial would get round the problems of phase drift and synchronisation. |
I'm sute that one of the original Phillps systems used and electromechanical pickup, so I think that in some way this is actually Baked ....... |
Suggested category - "Product: VCR" ?? |
This isn't really a VCR. Maybe "Product: Scopical Devices", if it ever comes into being. |
Have little holes at in the edge of the disk, so the record doubles as the Nipkow disc in a Baird system TV. That way, the signal and the scan have to keep in sync. |
A reflection version would have little phosphor dots in red, green, and blue in the Nipkow pattern, and send the amplitude signal to a UV LED. |
Even though it's far superior. |
I wonder what the maximum data rate of vinyl is. |
[bristolz]'s reply demonstrates the only flaw in this otherwise excellent idea. Existing vinly snobs would spend twice as much time boring their friends extolling the virtues of vinyl, and going on about how they found a wonderful early edition of The Maltese Falcon for a fiver from some shop in Camden. |
As for the data rate, I guess it would be a bit better than 1xCDs - which are about 170 kbps (back of envelope calculation, so may be wrong) |
How can someone who favors vinyl over all that esoteric digital stuff be called a snob? You have that backwards. |
1X CDs are 90kbps, I thought. |
[bristolz], I was thinking of some of my neo-Luddite friends, who have a evangelical penchant for vinyl that borders on the fetishistic. |
The only drawback: vinyl=bad for environment. I'm wondering, since a laserdisc fit one movie on it and was the size of a 33 record, how huge would these have to be, and how fast would they have to spin to get the data rate necessary for minimal viewing capability? |
And whether they would be CAV or CLV? |
Can I borrow that copy of the Falcon's Malteser when you've finished with it, whimsickle? |
I like Richard K's self playing Nipkow discs. Very elegant simplicity! |
My friend has about a trillion movies from the 70's and 80's, printed on vinyl discs the size of 45's, encased in protective sleeves. They weigh appx. 1 million pounds, skip entertainingly, and go through styli quickly. They are called CED's (capacitance electronic discs). They are exactly as great as you'd hope. |
and when you get bored with that, you can go outside and play frisbee, or eat off them, ot pretend your a car ant they are your wheels, or feed them to your polar bear, or bury them, or turn them into shiny metal boomerangs and throw them at people like the feral kid on mad max 2, or mount it on a stick and randomly spin it whenever the situation arises like those guys om mad max 3 (the worst one in the trilogy) but those are just a few ideas from me, the ginger head man |
