Somehow, however snugly I tuck my gloves into my coat sleeves on these Arctic mornings (currently 13°F or so in NYC), they constantly pop out.
So I propose standardized Velcro® attachments on gloves and coat sleeves. When you put the gloves on, they will lock into place, sparing you the indignity
of cold wrists and constant fussing.
I'm not entirely sure which way round they should go (i.e., whether the tape should be outside or inside the glove, and inside or outside the sleeve), but either way, your skin should only come into contact with the soft furry side.

Idiot mittens,i was forced to wear these things whilst living in Canada, the only problem was everytime you waved at someone you would slap yourself in the face with the other mitten. |

Velcro is good, but tends to snag on things unpredictably. If there were small, alternating permanent magnets in the glove cuffs, and corresponding electromagnets in the coat sleeves, the two could be commanded to bond or release at the touch of a button, to predetermined locations (the electromagnets would also have alternating polarisations, causing them to "key". |

I've seen coats with mittens that attach to the sleeves with zippers, but they're kinda, you know, for kids. |
Sounds to me like you need to get your sleeves lengthened. |

But then he would have to bend down to scratch his knees, shirley ? |

hmm, I have seen that magnet idea somewhere else, hmm. |
While the idea sounds great, there is no way I want Velcro on my coat ever again. Every time I would wear a nice sweater or scarf it would get snagged. Zippers on the other hand... that's an excellent Idea !! |

You could have a fleece liner in the cuff of the jacket with a thumb hole in it that came down and went under the mittens, thus preventing a gap. Baked on some fire-fighting coats. |
maybe you could have a jumper with arms that have no holes for the hands..... hey presto....built in gloves and no gap.....just dont try doing anything beyond basic caveman with your hands |
Do you think that you could place Velcro(R) on the outside of each mitt in such a way that they can be attached together? Prevents losing "the other" mitt. |
well, when i was a kid, the mittens were attached together by a long cord. so, first you put on the mittens, and then the coat, and your mittens stayed on. i should probabally go back to this method, having lost a couple pairs of gloves this winter .... |

I was just designing (in my head) a coat that had gloves on the end of the sleeves instead of a hole for your hand to poke out of and (after recovering from my disappointment that other people had had this idea) my solution to the 'caveman hands' problem, outlined above by mikee, was to have a flap on the palm side of the glove. Just unpop the attachments and you're into hands-free mode. |
