User Page Idea Count

Curiosity Satisfier

When a user page is loaded (any user), it would be convenient to see, at the bottom of the Idea List, a Count of the number of Ideas posted by that user.

This Idea stems from laziness. My own Count is (at the time of this writing) about 500, but I don't want to scroll the page and manually count them to find out the exact number. I'd probably lose count!

does this work? http://www.halfbake...20ideas?op=editview
who can tell? [calum, Nov 27 2013]

Idea count for this page javascript:alert(do...incat/g).length-1);
You can use this bookmarklet (it'll only work correctly if you're actually on a user page, though) [ytk, Nov 27 2013]

I don't know if they teach estimating in schools any more, but the young woman who gave an hour presentation on the tactics somewhere around second grade made a forever change in my life.

In one minute, by eye I estimate 540.
normzone, Nov 27 2013

       512
ytk, Nov 27 2013

[normzone], 500 IS the estimate that I made, based on ideas in one page-length, multiplied by number of pages, plus a partial page.
Vernon, Nov 27 2013

       512

Just make up a number, no-one will know whether you are right or wrong.
pocmloc, Nov 27 2013

       ...or care.
DrBob, Nov 27 2013

500+ club members should have their names in <blink> text at every appearance on the site, even bracketed references. Don't you think so, [Vernon]?
swimswim, Nov 27 2013

[V], knowing your propensity for efficiency: are you on low-res view ?
FlyingToaster, Nov 27 2013

Only 351 ideas in 10 years. I'm just twiddling my thumbs, dammit.
theircompetitor, Nov 27 2013

but if you decrease the font size enough the titles will end up on one line
FlyingToaster, Nov 27 2013

[FlyingToaster], I have a very nice high-res display (2048x1152), and my computer is set to use it fully. All those Idea titles in my list easily fit one per line on my display. The estimation of 500 was quite easy and, if the "512" posted here by others is correct (thank you!), then my estimate was certainly in the ball-park.

Nevertheless, should someone want to browse the User Pages, that person would quickly tire of even making estimates of numbers of Ideas.

While I don't know how that List is pulled from the overall HalfBakery database, I do know that in SQL queries a "number of affected rows" is exactly as available as the data-items pulled. (So if SQL is used, it should be super-easy to Bake this particular Idea.)
Vernon, Nov 27 2013

oh, don't thank me, thank [jutta]; I just clicked on it.

       and thanks [jutta] :)
FlyingToaster, Nov 27 2013

//Nevertheless, should someone want to browse the User Pages, that person would quickly tire of even making estimates of numbers of Ideas.//

You don't have to. Just drag the bookmarklet I added to your toolbar (or otherwise make a bookmark of it) and then you can just click on it while browsing a user page to get the number of posted ideas.
ytk, Nov 27 2013

So, Vernon is quite prolific but well short leaders like [xenzag] who is nearing a thousand. When it comes to the number of words, however... :)
theircompetitor, Nov 27 2013

// it would be convenient to see

Why? How is this information useful?
tatterdemalion, Nov 27 2013

[tatterdemalion], see the subtitle: "Curiosity Satisfier". "Usefulness" need not apply. This IS the HalfBakery, right?

[ytk and FlyingToaster], I agree that the bookmarklet works nice, but it is still cumbersome in comparison to having the Idea count simply be part of the overall page-display.
Vernon, Nov 28 2013

If you unflag the "By Author" filter in the first link, you get everybody's counts... some 6,000 users I estimate...

and of course Congratulations on a Binary 500.
FlyingToaster, Nov 28 2013

Probably something to be said at this point about quality vs quantity...
hippo, Nov 28 2013

// see the subtitle: "Curiosity Satisfier". "Usefulness" need not apply. This IS the HalfBakery, right?

I considered that and dismissed it because it requires someone to actually do something to create, and ideas in the halfbakery category ought to have usefulness. Outside of this category I take your point however.

It places focus on something unimportant and counter to the purpose of HB. What is the value of knowing this number? It matters in no possible way.

For those very few that care, it would contribute to a dick showing contest. The rest don't care.
tatterdemalion, Nov 28 2013

[hippo], I basically agree with you about quality. And while the voting system here allows a sort of "quality estimate" to be applied to each Idea, there is one way in which it might not be perfectly reliable. I quote from some of the text on my User Page:

"Hmmm...I just noticed that a bunch of other people have a lot of ideas posted, of which a huge proportion were voted with croissants rather than fishbones. Then I saw someone's confession regarding deletion of one's own unpopular ideas. Cowards! Just remember that once upon a time, harnessing fire was probably an unpopular idea."
Vernon, Nov 28 2013

//It matters in no possible way// and the day they invent a robot to write HB posts is the day idle curiousity won't strike the poster upon occasion.

       anyways both baked and redundant.
FlyingToaster, Nov 28 2013

[FlyingToaster], if by "baked" you are referring to the bookmarklet, well, then, here is a question for [tatterdemalion]: If the Idea-count data is useless, then why was the bookmarklet created?
Vernon, Nov 30 2013

// why was the bookmarklet created?

That question is better directed to the person who created the bookmarklet.
tatterdemalion, Nov 30 2013

       prefer quality
neelandan, Nov 30 2013

oh, you want it on the account page ? sorry, meh.
FlyingToaster, Nov 30 2013

//If the Idea-count data is useless, then why was the bookmarklet created?//

Because it was a problem to solve, and I'd never really used JavaScript before. Idle hands and all that.
ytk, Nov 30 2013

[ytk], thanks for the response. I might mention that I've been messing around with JavaScript for a few years now, but never heard of "bookmarklets" before. Nice job!

While I like the principle of this idea, there needs to be a mechanism to not encourage the posting of mediocre ideas. Displaying the total only if a word- count minimum and idea-count requirement were met might work.
sninctown, Dec 03 2013

I wish the ideas would all crash out of the system everytime the halfbakery is crawled by Internet Archive, leaving a series of postapocalyptic society rebuilds, based on what ideas they recall from the archives. The user page count maximum is limited to the number of ideas possible since the last page crawl by Internet Archive.
rcarty, Dec 03 2013

//While I like the principle of this idea, there needs to be a mechanism to not encourage the posting of mediocre ideas.//

I thought about modifying the bookmarklet to also display the average idea score. It's certainly possible, and not especially complicated, but something about the idea of “grading” users didn't quite sit right with me.
ytk, Dec 03 2013

Grading for what meta-jutta level compliance or meta concept level compliance, or meta utilitarian evaluation?

The halfbakery Idea is [jutta], that's who could tell you what kind of things should be on the halfbakery. Then there's the halfbakery idea is halfbakery, meaning an idea that should not take material form, or is not meant to take material form besides a short writing that barely attempts to realize the idea. Then there's the utilitarian aggregate of ideas that make people happy for various reasons, or fulfill some practical purpose that are acceptable and are indicated by voting, and suggestion. These three factors maybe more shape the ultimate idea creation. Appealing to jutta's concept of a halfbakery outlined in her meta section, the concept of halfbakery as incomplete concepts, or halfbakery as user generated from content and displays of contentment and discontentment. Content production interpreted as an act of personal contentment production. ie. I post an idea about reification because reification crosses hyperreality from indeterminancy to determinancy - the halfbakery problem: making an idea real, or materializing it completely baking it. The problem is that the utilitarian value of the halfbakery leans towards reification with the weight of science and not free with the weightlessness indeterminancy as paranoid speculations about what is possible.
rcarty, Dec 03 2013

heh, half-baked halfbakery... mind, we got the good half.

Not only that but... wait... do möbius strip ideas count as fully baked ?
