While reading a pilot's guide to the Supermarine Spitfire IIA and IIB I was surprised just how hand-cranked flying one of these was - in particular, that it had a horn.

Presumably it was so gallant Spitfire pilots could beep at fleeing German bombers who'd forgotten to close the bomb doors.

An earlier and a gentler age.

       Not just flying. The undercarriage is raised and lowered manually; because of the placement of the lever close to the fuselage longerons, incautious use can cause a very nasty injury known as "Spitfire knuckle".   

       It's truly remarkable, when reviewing ATC and CVR recordings, how very, very civil and polite aircrew are - even in the face of imminent and unavoidable death.
