It has come to my attention, that no matter who is in No. 10/The White House, thay always end up f****ing something up. To combat this, a town of around 10,000 people could be built, and kept seperate from the rest of the country, like it's a federal district or something along those lines. Political
policies could be tried out there at first to see how they run. I f they are a success, then thay are made law. The town could have it's own business's, education system, supermarket, TVStation, 'mini' Internet, factories and even it's own stock exchange, purly to make sure that the rest of the country isn't buggerd up. The people taking part could recieve a small monetary bonus for taking part.

Then someone would say this town is run terribly, what we really need to do is to set up an policy housing estate within the policy town. |
|
|
Any law that was found to be unsatisfactory would be repealed within this town, setting everything back inline with the rest of the country, and therefore only buggering up a 10,000 person town, not a 50 million person country. |

Nothing's going to make EVERYONE happy. You must realize this. |
|

Yes, but thankfully someone constructed the useful phrase, 'You *can* please most of the people most of the time'. The policies that are mostly succesful, say, satisfies 2/3rds of the population, are enacted throughout the country. |

[And before anyone says it, this town will be more diverse than something that is very diverse indeed, so diverse infact, that it has just graduated from the most diverse University in the world, with a diverese PHDiverse in diversety, with a minor diverse dynamics] |

As Harold MacMillan said: "Events, dear boy, events". Tony seems to have screwed up with FMD and W with this EP3 thing. How would a trial town help with the kind of decision making processes needed in these cases? In democracies policy making is necessarily too often driven by responses to crises. |

Gordon Comstock: Obviously there are some things that cannot be tried out at trial town. The foot and mouth epidemic is/was one of these things. For the most part, trial town would be used to see the effects of things which would have to be passed in parliment, or the budget, or things that are notcontroled by nature. |

I thought that was what Scotland was for. Remember the poll tax? |
|
|
I was about to say the same thing Gordon, you beat me to it!
Come to think of it, the Tories messed around with Scotland, because they knew they weren't going to get many votes there anyhow. You'd expect Labour to do something similar with, say, the countryside?
Oops. |

By taking in people that have different backgrounds. |

Maybe he is planning to concentrate especially diverse people there. |

If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following:
There would be:
57 Asians
21 Europeans
14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south
8 Africans
52 would be female
30 would be white
30 would be Christian
11 would be homosexual
6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and all 6 would be from the United States.
80 would live in substandard housing
70 would be unable to read
50 would suffer from malnutrition
1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth
1 would have a college education
1 would own a computer
i dont know how this compares to canberra. |

waugsqueke: If you look at the original idea, and turn your brain into a kitchen towel, you will be able to absorb the last sentence, "The People taking part could recieve a small monetary bonus for taking part." |
|
|
chimpboy: The above is the average for the world, what i am suggesting would encompass the diversity from strictly one country. |
|
|
[I don't know why i bother...] |
|
|
People would be interviewed and checked out, background wise in order to ensure diversity. The money would be a way of encouraging people to apply. |

[I would say something but it normally blows up in my face] |

I think Jim Jones said "Just calm down and drink the cool-aid". |
|
|
Did Margaret Thatcher not do this with the Poll-Tax in Scotland? |
|
|
Judging by the policies enforced in this country (USA), the population of this "testing" town could drop from 10,000 to 0 very quickly. |
