Treacle
Punk covers of schmaltzy songs | |
A Ramones-style punk band that performs high-speed covers
of schmaltzy classics like "The Green Green Grass of Home,"
and Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey" ... Hey, if Pearl Jam can cover
"Last Kiss," why not?

Isn't that what the Sex Pistols, Jimi Hendrix, and
various others already did back in the 70's and 80's -
then, in the 90's and 00's bands turned the trend
upside down and re-recorded classic punk tracks as
schmaltzy elevator music. At least I think that's what
happened. |

In a hotel lobby recently I heard a steel drum version of "Love will tear us apart" - dreadful, but also strangely compelling.
Anyway, I think that having a musical group record [song originally recorded in style A] in hilariously or disturbingly different [style B] isn't exactly a new idea, so this is [marked-for-deletion] as being widely known to exist. |

//the Sex Pistols, Jimi Hendrix, and various others already did back in the 70's//
Of course, Hendrix didn't enjoy the punk '70's quite as much as the Pistols did.
For not only having apalling knowledge of popular rock legends but also for demonstrating it in public so conclusively, I nominate zen_tom to be the first halfbaker to be taken out and ritually sacrificed to the sun by carving his heart out with a blunt spoon. Plus, he should be humiliated a bit as well by having small children point at him and laugh (if they don't already do that anyway). |

WKTE (1090 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a gospel format....I am confused... |

I think [squeaketh] is subtly suggesting that there is a danger that gospel classics such as Dorothy Love Coates' "Get Away Jordan" or Sister Winona Carr's "Life is a ball game" might be ruined by being subjected to a ham-fisted punk-lite makeover. |

//first halfbaker [...] ritually sacrificed// - er, "first"? Of how many? |
|
|
//taken out and ritually sacrificed// Ha! - It's not appalling knowledge of popular rock legends - it's
just that I've developed over time a
slightly wider definition of "Punk" which includes
not
only jumping up and down and spitting, but also
extends
its roots into the rich earth of the experimental
protest prog of
the 70's which paved punk's way. The protest-prog
rockers may have been doing it from a very
different angle,
but the end result was often the same in that it
was
often discordant, weird and largely unlistenable. |

lurch, as many as it takes!
Squirm & struggle all you like, z_t, but there's a sacrificial altar with your name on it at your nearest local ziggurat. We just need to scrub it down a bit first before we get the feathered costumes & the jaguar face-paint on. |

Black Flag covered 'Louie, Louie'. Does that qualify? |
