The roofless subway car has arrived, and tourists as well as locals are filling its seats to experience a wild ride. The city’s purchase of open cars to lead each of its subway trains has proved to be an unparalleled success. Passengers have thronged to the new seats to thrillingly speed through the
dark tunnels with backward flowing hair and eyes wide from wind and fright.
Amusement park ride seat restraints and side windows keep heads and hands inside the car as its riders enjoy the cooling air stream while screaming with excitement as lights and trains flash by. A net at the back of the topless tube car has yielded a rich harvest of caps, wigs, umbrellas, newspapers and a cockatoo.
Cars do it; buses do it, and now trains too. Get up early to beat the rush, to feel the rush.

This is not new. The original subway systems in London were pulled by steam engines and had open carriages. So baked, i am afraid. |
