Why not *threaten* to dam the Gibraltar Straits and then demand Billions of Dollars/Pounds not to do so.
If you damed the Gibraltar Straits think of the damage it would do!
If the sea levels in the Med rose:
=> Most of Italy, Greece, Spain, Egypt and North Africa etc etc etc would be underwater.
=>
Mass droughts everywhere except for the med.
=> Venice = Atlantis
=> Rome = Venice
If the sea level in the Med dropped
=> It would force UP sea levels everywhere else
=> The seaside towns in Italy and the south of France etc would be 200 miles from the coast.
=> Albanians could no longer escape to Italy by boat.
=> The worlds highest mountain would be in Italy
The worlds goverments would have no choice but to pay. Spain, Morroco and the UK would have to Collaborate to make the threat believable, but the pay-off would be worth it.

OK, hint taken, speling and cAPITALISATION corrected. Do I get a bread thingy now? |
|
|
You can't get a croissant, 'cause half of france is underwater. |

I'll be in Gibraltar in three weeks. I'll ask them what they think. |

If we damed the strait they would simply blow up the Dam. We would have lost a multi billion dollar project and they would only lose one missle. Not very profitable if you ask me.— | wood2coal,

[wood2coal] - stop picking faults. They would have no legal right to blow it up. Besides... merely the threat of us damning the straights would be enough to extort the money. |
|
|
What organization would be doing the threatening? What demonstration of ability to dam the straits would be used to back up the threat? |

To end any speculation, the Med would empty. Despite all the rivers that flow into it ( Volga, Nile and Danube to name but three) there is almost always an inbound current at the Straits of Gibraltar. |
|
|
The only good thing about doing this would be that most of Spain would get flooded. |

Serves them right for persecuting us Gibraltarians for so many years. |

Lula, proud Gibraltarian. |

I seem to recall reading that this has actually occurred several times over geologic history. |

If memory serves, last time the Med was isolated it set off an ice age. Don't quote me on that, though. |
|
|
I don't think that blackmail would really work since it'd probably be a relatively easy thing to blow up. |
|
|
A better way to go about things would be to convince the world that draining the Med would be a good thing. Then, after the basin had become populated, you threaten to fill it again unless given a hefty sum, a bus to the airport, and a jet to Bermuda. |
