The Must Flush

The toilet that flushes due to toxicity.

Yes we have toilets that flush when you walk away from them, but that simply is not enough. We have all heard of the courtesy flush,(tactical flush to decrease odor during a bathroom break of the abnormal variety), but this only seems to happen if it is requested by another individual.

I propose this, eqip a toilet with a Nitrogen (N2), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Hydrogen (H2) and Methane (CH4) mix detector. Once the sensor is set off the toilet automaticly flushes.

This idea came to me as I entered the bathroom last night only to find the person before me (19 yr old brother in law) decided that at 2:00 am it was not important to flush down his excrement. As I lifted the lid the horrid smell permeated the room causeing me to gag and run for the other bathroom.

This all could have been avoided if The Must Flush had been installed.

This idea could also work for an automatic air freshener.

Note: All attepts were made to eliminate the use of potty talk, bathroom humor and other disgusting connotations.

It is also a good idea 21Q. Mine idea would work even when a person is still sitting and wouldn't require expensive sonar. I have a methane detector that I bought for like 40 bucks.

       Nice link.

May i ask what you use that for? Working out who farted maybe?

I thought sulfur was responsible for the smell (not methane, which is odorless). Wouldn't one sulfur dioxide detector suffice? p.s. please correct my chemistry if I'm wrong.

Phundug, you are correct sulfur is the source of the smell, it is responsible for one percent of the "leaked" gasses. My thought was that pooh stinks period. It would be eaiser to detect the gasses that are in larger quantity than the mere one percent sulfur is responsible for. I think also that the sulfur is expelled from the body leaving the log in the toilet. The remaining crap in crap stinks as well.

Think of implementing the must flush in a cheaper and more reliable way.

Flushing can be triggered by opening the doorhandle from the inside.

Could be cheaply and easily done with a small switch, etc..

//Flushing can be triggered by opening the doorhandle from the inside//

You assume we all close the door when we use the bathroom.
Chefboyrbored, Nov 22 2006

You also assume that people actually get everything in the toilet.
craigts, Nov 22 2006

Ya know Craigts, I did assume that.
Chefboyrbored, Nov 22 2006

We're also assuming that the vast majority of the smell in the air is actually caused by a solid log located (usually) below the water line of the toilet.

Whether this is the case or not, I suspect that much of this problem could be solved by separating the seat from the bowl, and using some manner of scales in the bowl. As most feces is solid, and negatively buoyant, the weight of the bowl should increase as feces is added to it, even if water is forced out of the bowl in the process.

The must flush could then determine loading based on a very cheap and reliable technology of weight measurement.

It seems we assume quite a bit here on the HB.

Air is composed of 72 % nitrogen and contains a minmal amount of carbon dioxide, so the sensor would constantly go off. Also, all these gases are odourless. What you really would want to check for are sulfur compounds. -
Saruman, Dec 21 2006

A sensor dosen't care about the smell of a gas, it would only sense the density of the different gasses associated with human waste. When a certain level of the mixed gasses reached a pre set number, the toilet would flush.
