Aha Trump's plan becomes clear....

If we assume a 4 metre wall, say 1 metre thick running 3,145 km that's (reaches out of for an A -1 sized envelope...) 12,580,000 m3 airspace and 3,145,000m2 less land area to defend, call it the same as 4 New York Citys.

At a guess the DOD can cancel half a F35 fighter and maybe two platoons?

Now, if the wall were to be 4m thick..

It still wouldn't be as thick as he is.

// the same as 4 New York Citys //

       or ....

       1. Issue an executive order requiring all U.S.-born citizens to leave New York.

       2. When they have both left, build a wall round the four* boroughs.

You could even make a movie about it .... oh, wait ...

       * For hygienic reasons, Staten Island would be towed out into the Atlantic and scuttled in deep water.

I believe that something similar already happened in prehistory. Unfortunately the water off of the coast of France wasn't deep enough so the bits that stuck up were just left and were nicknamed "The Sceptred Isle" or some such bollocks.

Sp. The Great wall of chirona.

There is some kind of logic to it. If it was the Great Ditch, then it would be upsizing, as the US would have more surface area and airspace to guard, unless it was constructed underground.

What would you do with the excavated fill ?

Actually, to reduce tunneling, a deep concrete-lined dry moat will be needed.

//What would you do with the excavated fill ?

       Bury it, of course.

Anyway, the whole idea is foolishness, the immigrants will just in through the tunnels the Chinese made in 1960's. They tried to cover it up with the ludicrous Battle Beneath the Earth film, but everyone knows it's a smokescreen.

// the tunnels the Chinese made in 1960's. //

You mean the ones where the Greys keep all those stolen lawnmowers ? Best to put it in one of the Polar holes, plenty of room there.

So, basically you want to make the American population more dense?

//At a guess the DOD can cancel half a F35 fighter and maybe two platoons?//

You could put an F35 on the wall, using some sort of rail. The F35 could then be pulled back and forth with string, by not running the engine, the aircraft will have a significant range increase. Such flights could be recorded with sophisticated equipment to demonstrate just how good the nap-of-the-Earth flight performance is: "1000 miles at EXACTLY 4m altitude! don't look at the speed, bob had to use a block and tackle for the hills."

Not advised. We already have a few inescapable black holes. Have you ever tried navigating out of LaGuardia?

I do wonder about the lack of imagination you'd have to display to think that a wall was something to be excited about. There are a number of large walls in history: Hadrian's, the Chinese one, Max etc. What is needed is a plan with ambition. If it is necessary to put some quasi architectural feature along the political border between the USA and EUM why not a pergola or a ha-ha, this latter retaining the wall-like element while allowing better views of EUM, so the portly, mirror-shaded minimum wagers given the job of making America safe from Mexicans again can see the blighters sneaking up on them. Moats are sweet, too, yes, in this case each access point from EUM to USA is through a mock-13th C. gatehouse, bedecked from founds to bretèches in as much gold as can be diverted from the administration's plan to acid plate all American national monuments, starting with the fifth and largest head on Mr Rushmore, the moat filled with candiru, crocodiles and various adaptable felons making America great again by snorkeling up and down the brown waters, armed with harpoons, knowing each Mexican they spear is another year off their sentence.

A dual function canal-moat would work, put the chancers that operate the panama canal out of business.
bs0u0155, Jan 30 2017

A canal might work, but it is a tad dry in the south, and the 8000ft peaks and platos...palutos...high-up flat bits somewhere in the middle-ish. It might make for an exhausting pedalo trip, not to mention the pirates.

Comforting news this morning "It's also important to remember that there's a difference between personality disorder and mental illness.”.

Well I'm standing by the river, but the water doesn't flow,
it boils with every poison you can think of...
Oh no, this is the wall of downsizing.
pashute, Jan 30 2017

As for the Great Wall of Downsizing, I'm not so sure of it. It`s a borderline case.
