People watch video streams that are labelled with numbers
and
graphs.
People solve complicated algorithms like the travelling
salesman problem by entering number sequences with their
remote control or phone keypad.
People then get paid to solve algorithms problems.
Baked as mechanical
turk but not like this problem.
Rough idea

I don't get this. Why use television to do this? |
To really solve the traveling salesman's problem, you gotta
tell him about the dude that keeps visiting his wife as soon
as he hits the road. |
There's an App for that ... |
I just don't like it. [-] |
The use of the television is we can get large groups of people
to vote on computational
solutions. |
Through the magic of the telephone and a modem,
you can get them to communicate that vote, too. I've
heard they have gone way past 8 bit these days, and
you don't even need to pick up the handset. |
I love numbers and graphs. Can't get enough of them. |
// vote on computational solutions // |
That's irrational. A computational solution isn't a matter if opinion or perception; it's a convergent outcome. |
Having a vote on a mathematically rigorous process is nonsensical, and if the process isn't rigorous it isn't useful. |
The goal is human beings do computational work. |
Yes, but I'm not convinced that (a) using TV is worthwhile,
given the ubiquity of computers and their greater versatility
and (b) you haven't provided an example of a problem that
this would work for. For instance, there are computer
algorithms that can find a better (though not necessarily
perfect) solution to the travelling salesman problem faster
than a human. |
But humans are slow, inefficient and notably error-prone; hence Mr. Babbage's intent to generate and print mathematical tables by mechanical means, to avoid the problems arising from human-generated versions. |
Also the user interface is clumsy and imprecise. |
Much better to deploy humans to perform tasks that they're good at like ... er ... |
Why not use a computer instead of a TV that's just a
one
way, non interactive computer that doesn't compute? |
Actually modern TVs and cable boxes are interactive
computers but that's
not the point. |
They say that someday, phones might not have to
plug into the wall, and could even include video
capability. But I say, bah. I'll see that when I see self-
driving cars and robotic vacuum cleaners. |
You can buy Robotic vacuum cleaners, I have one. |

The goal of this idea was to give everyone a job that they can
be paid by just answering questions while watching a television
screen. |
Well, at least it's not in other:general |
// give everyone a job that they can be paid by just answering questions while watching a television screen. // |
By "everyone", does that include the Proles as well as the Inner Party and the Outer Party ? |
How about a scheme where everyone monitors everyone else via their Telescreens ? |

TV set sales are outstripped by phones, presumably smart, which can be cast to Televisions but this remote job market needs a steady supply of electricity and a mobile network. Not possible for some areas on the globe. |
Perfectly possible, just not implemented - yet. It will be, tho, and much, much sooner than currently imagined - because there's money to be made. |
Forget rich customers; the big bucks are in making very modest amounts of money from extremely large numbers of relatively poor customers. Plus the wealthy are selective, picky, demanding, and troublesome if they're in the slightest bit unhappy. The poor are much easier to victimize. |
I have always had a problem with "making money". |
That's why you have "VICTIM" on your forehead in big glowing letters ... |
My letters are a nice discreet turquoise. |

Before removal, mine were a slanted yellow and black motif. Can't give tip-offs. |

No way! The next thing you'll be telling me is that
I can send a picture of a piece of paper over the
telephone! |
