An eyeball is suspended in a clear fluid. inside the eye is a magnet. Around the vat holding the fluid are 3 pairs of coils, able to generate magnetic fields perpendicular to each other (3 Helmholtz coils, in effect).
The desired gaze direction is produced by the right combination of field-vectors.
