standing room only

Many office workers with back problems choose to stand while working. A Stand Up Vehicle would permit driving while standing for a better back and a bird’s eye view of the traffic. Steering, on-the-floor pedals and the “seat”-belt would all match an erect posture, and a high seat shelf would allow temporary easing of the knees.

The third in a stretch (^) sedan.

Besides the heightened air resistance, and the added saftey issues, the cars would look pretty silly. I bone.

Might be tricky to keep one's balance while working the clutch as well as the pedals if it's a manual shift. Is there the option for convertible, too? That would be deadly (in a good way).

       You couldn't fall asleep. Good.

Also, drunk people would get nowhere, fast. Good.

A Dance Dance Revolution pad would facilitate pressing the pedals, and for convertible owners and those who pray at red lights, there’s a recess behind the feet to allow standing on the knees.

Jeez, could you imagine how many passengers you could fit standing up?

I'm still not convinced. How would the driver see over the dashboard if he/she's kneeling? And is there a special altar where I can burn incense while praying at a red light? If not, I don't want the car.
Machiavelli, Aug 19 2004

There's no kneeling. It's a standing car. It's for standing.

Perhaps it could be something like a riding a horse, where you can either sit in the saddle or stand in the stirrups.

The garbage trucks hereabouts allows drivers to stand. I've seen forklifts with standing driving positions as well as delivery Stepvans. None of these vehicles, of course, offer much to the commuter.

There already is a method of transportation which does this... the bus at rush hour. I can never get a seat, so I stand all the way home.

Also, the safety aspects for this type of vehicle would be very difficult to work out. Not to mention fuel economy (lack thereof!)..
