With age and infirmity, some medical procedures, and
inebriation, stairs can be a problem to ascend
or descend.
Solutions to this problem include the bungalow, the stair
lift, a retained, musclebound porter, the climbing step
[link], and
slumping in a chair with the telly on until 4am.
We
have a new solution, the staircase lock. Similar to
locks on canals, but smaller.
A narrow canal system is built on one side of the
staircase fully enclosed with no leaks.
To use, the user sits in a mini canal boat and enters. Lock
gates between stairs, and water pumps,
allow the levels between adjacent stairs to be equalised
so that the user can move between stairs
either up or down.

Simple, elegant and practical. Plus, if you keep a pet salmon,
it could use this as a salmon-run. |

Could there be a boat made for two? I think it would be
romantic to float up to the next level, with the right certain
someone, that is. |

Ohhhhh ... please, just get a room ... or if not, you and [xen] should keep your sordid fantasies to yourselves. |

This idea is exactly what I hoped it would be. |

For greater efficiency, the staircase lock could have separate
"up" and "down" lock series, each consisting of a prime number
of
lock chambers interconnected diagonally, like the Branstoke
Ladder near Swavesdale Regis. In this way, no (or an
arbitrarily small amount of) energy is needed to move a
person either up or down. |

Shouldn't you two guys from across the pond be heading up
