Squike

Square tire trike

So the tires of this tricycle are square.

At four corners of these tires are inverted hemispheres waiting to be flapped down in front of the square tire about to ride over it.

Every hemispherical section rotates after use to reday itself for the next pass over.

It should even be able to turn. (shrugs)

Square wheel communal bike Requires a pre-laid track. Otherwise identical to this idea. [pocmloc, Mar 26 2025]

Square-Wheel Bike II //have the leading edge of the triangle wheel fold out and then fold back into the triangle as the bike rolled over it so it would be riding on a segment of a circle at any given time, just like if it was a connected circular wheel.// — doctorremulac3, May 24 2023 [pocmloc, Mar 26 2025]

Technically, it's not all that difficult to pedal ... Grasshopper_20cycle
... unless you factor in the direction you're pedaling in. [normzone, Mar 27 2025]

Two hemispheres would mean you'd just put your wheel inside a sphere. Four means ... something similar, but bumpier?

A hemisphere or semicircle would not work you need (to quote the link) //a hyperbolic cosine with an arc length of one side of the square//.

Um, yeah... that's what I meant.

This thing would just lay the track in front of itself, making for a smooth ride as long as one were on a fairly level surface. The flapping might become annoying so some sort of pneumatic or magnetic damper might be nice.

Self-laying tracks with square wheels would be pretty cool.
Might require some funky gearing to get it to run smooth (possibly a square sprocket on a chain drive?).
(A-ha! moment...) Have the track driven by a (relatively) hidden round driver (not mating with the cosines), & the square wheels are just idlers; so no need for weird gearing!

Um, I thought of some gravity activated method... but if you want to complicate what could be indicated by a simple level gauge... then sure.

       That would work.

The Squike will never be mainstream.

It will just be cool for its own sake.

Kind of like those beach constructions that walk along with sails and poles? Just smaller and less interesting?

It WILL be cool for its own sake. Yet difficult to pedal.

Well now, if you want difficult to pedal ... (link).
