As good as crab, but more available!

Credit to Abbydz for this fine, flavorful idea. Consider the crab cake - delectable and loved by all, but relatively expensive because of the scarcity of crabs. Plus crabs are rare far from the ocean. Why not use the crabs close relative, the spider? The beauty of this - large spider rances could be set up, feeding them on flies attricted to naturally occuring dung and trash.

Spider species with tasty, crablike meat would be selected and bred for size. On slaughter, the meat would be processed away from the legs and formed into "land crab" cakes. Tasty and ecologically correct, and no-one the wiser!

Quite Baked, except for rances (what that? ed.) - we've linked to spider cuisine before, mostly for the benefit of blissmiss.

Oh, and you can't rance spiders, whether it's for meat or for spider silk - they eat each other.

A rance is like a dance, but productive of spiders for the table.

<Shiver> Ewwwww.....I don't know whether to be scared or delighted that the blighters are being reduced in numbers. </Shiver>

According to the "Imitation Crab" link the fake meat is made from ground up fish and added flavors. If that works anything may work and we can even leave the fish alone. How about "crab meat" made from soy or seaweed? Crab flavored Jello anyone?

something about little legless spiders in little wheeled carts is just wrong.
