You may be aware that 100 among the world's top aids researchers were
killed when their airplane was struck by a missile.
It's rare for this much specialized knowledge to be lost at once. Following
standard procedures with regard to their working papers would deepen the
tragedy.
I propose
a special counsel be convened to collect, evaluate, and publish
the unfinished works of these researchers so at least their work up to the
present day won't be lost.

Just returned from verifying your assertion - yes, the press says it is so. Boy, are the conspiracy theorists going to have fun with that one. |
|
|
I'm not sure a special counsel is the right way to
do it. If the deceased were group heads, it would
be fairly usual for someone else from their group
to step in (at least in the interim) to continue to
direct research. If they were postdocs and
students, the group head would typically reassign
their work to someone else in the group. It's fairly
unusual to have a lone worker whose work is lost
with them. |
|
|
What would be good, though, is if additional funds
could be made available to the groups that have
lost people. Assuming that the guilty government
is identified, part of the damages claimed should
be for this purpose. |

Next up, from RT.com (Putin's propaganda machine): |

The AIDS virus has mutated to the point where it can
launch missiles! Don't blame Russia. Blame the
gays! |

That said, I'm sure the NSA has all of their draft
papers and communications. We just need to ask
them for a backup. More importantly, we need more
smart people on the job. |

Yes, that would help your species quite a lot. |

The conference has 12,000 participants this year and
24,000 participants in 2012. The participants are not
all researchers. This is just to put the loss of
scientific knowledge into perspective. |
|
|
That is one shed of a big conference. |
|
|
The accident was the airplane was routed over a live
battlefield. Whether or not it was shot down
intentionally by a human or by an automatic surface
to air missile defense system should really be a
secondary consideration. |
|
|
If the AIDS conference continues its 50% biannual
rate of decline it shouldn't have any conference
goers at all in not many years. |

My kid was returning on a school trip to the US and
travelled through the same air corridor only 30 minutes
after MH17. I've spent the last 2 days pondering how to
infect the perpetrators with HIV once they're firmly
identified. The irony appeals. |

I'm all too aware that, although my family escaped harm,
our grief and bitterness has been merely shifted onto
others. So many good people lost. |
|
|
That's a big "Whew". Holy Moly. Glad your son is safe.
Feel sorry other's have lost theirs. I can't even begin
to feel that grief. No way of understanding or feeling
it. |

Thanks guys, if things had worked out slightly
different, right about now I'd be in The
Ukraine about to get myself shot by some
hyped up
thug with an AK47. |
