This is a low-tech device comprised of a pocket sized soundproof box, and a hollow tube that branches and ends in earplugs, much like a stethoscope. Although, unlike a stethoscope the device is intended to hear nothing at all. Most of the designing Is invested in soundproofing the box, which contains a pin attached to a magnet that drops on the push of the device's single button. The magnet simply moves in and out of a sheath that allows contact with the pin.

<Deep sigh>

A further development towards hearing yourself think would be to develop the Hear Horn. From a young age children are trained to beat out a steady rhythm in morse code using the muscles of their inner ear using stream of consciousness typing on a computer that electostimulates the muscle of the inner ear with the morse code signal for each letter typed. Eventually this process of conditioning will result in the innr ear beating out your thoughts letter by letter.

       If a pin drops in a soundproof box and nobody hears it, does a mime die … ?

       Heh, I can do that Morse code Eustachian-tube click thing. (+)

       No, you can't. That clicking noise you think you hear is Elbonian Brain Beetles tucking in to their dinner, i.e. your cerebrum.

       well they're in for a treat then, very tender, barely used.

       I've always thought that a cathedral is a perfectly designed place for one person alone to come to the conclusion that thoughts are things, becuase, when you are in a cathedral by yourself you have complete stillness and silence in a regularly shaped, stone container, so that every sound you make is reverberated back to you. It makes it easy for you to notice that sounds and actions that you may have previously thought were internal to you, actually have an effect on the outside world.

       They're also perfect places to fly radio- controlled model helicopters.

       The custodians do, however, seem a trifle intolerant. Oddly, when it's pointed out that there are signs prohibiting smoking, food and drink, flash photography and dogs (excpet assistance dogs) but nothing that says" No radio-controlled model aircraft", they can become surprisingly abusive. It came as a shock to discover that Bishops know that sort of language, and unfortunately those pole things with a hook on the end that they have make depressingly efficient swatters. Do they not realise that model aircraft are quite expensive to repair ? Mean-spirited, we call it.
