I posted earlier about a product that is used for crowd control by blasting them with a unidirectional, acoustical "laser". This is similar, but should be much more effective.

Your lungs have a resonance frequency. If that frequency was produced loud enough, it could induce cardiac arrest.

A kid did this a few years back with mosquitos.

       Ever heard of "brown noise"?
zen_tom, Aug 15 2007

Yes, I have! But I don't need yours, I have my own.

Wow, that's pretty nasty (if you're a mosquito)!

I'm confused about the whole brown noise thing - you see, I don't have any right now, and I'm not sure how I'd go about getting some (even if I wanted to).

But isn't this idea just a variation on that concept? If so, despite the interesting mosquito application, I'm afraid it really should be marked for removal.

I doubt that human lungs have a resonant frequency. They are squishy, not rigid. Maybe, just maybe, a person's chest cavity could resonate if they are singing, but changing the tension of the diaphragm would stop that. Or even crouching in pain.

Besides, how would you detect someone's lung frequency? Ask them?

To progress from lung resonance to cardiac arrest is an entirely unwarranted step. How, exactly, do the two link up?

"If" and "could" are not good words to use in an idea. Mosquitoes and humans are not all that similar. [-]

Bones might have a resonant frequency. I would bet on the mandible: it is hard. Teeth might also. Bones are in contiguity with many things that could dampen resonance.

       This old chestnut.

What is the resonant frequency of old chestnuts?
AbsintheWithoutLeave, Aug 15 2007

Flash Bang grenades will not kill you but they do utilize sound as a weapon causing extreme discomfort or even hearing damage to victims. I really don't think the resonance thing would work. If you were looking at ultra sonic frequency's that might have some potential(cause your body to boil)
