Taking a pipe out on a nice sunny day is one of my favorite ways to relax. Problem is I live in windy windy Minnesota, so I'm stuck with a dilemma: butane lighters taste bad, and wooden matches go out too quickly in the wind. I propose a pipe with a jewelers loupe (10x or highter) mounted over the bowl with a twistable mount for focusing the sunlight. This prevents problems caused by wind, and the taste of using any lighting instrument. The magnifier would be removable for regular use, of course.

One handed pipe idea. One-handed_20Pipe
[thatguy] never did link to his anno. [2 fries shy of a happy meal, Apr 12 2005]

I've heard of people using magnifying glasses to light cigarettes or pipes, but the screw on focusing, and attatching it to the pipe are completely unbaked as far as I can tell.

Darn fine idea for a pipe smoker on a sunny day.
I knew I'd seen this idea before, but it was in an anno.

\\I was reading a magazine for "smoking products" one day and I saw an ad for little glass pipes with built-in magnifying glasses over the bowls. These probably only work on sunny days but this idea's already baked. And they say that stuff's not good...go figure.\\ thatguy, Mar 04 2005

Even so, it's just hearsay at this point.

could you link that [2 fries shy of a happy meal]?

Don't you have those yummy green ants in Queensland, [UB]? I bet they would make a fine smoke.

Now, does this work because the loupe causes a bit of downdraft into the pipe bowl?
