Smelly houses. It can be hard to realise you're in one since your sense of smell becomes de-sensitized and visitors are simply too polite to tell you.
I propose a small alarm that you put near the smoke alarm. It is capable of analysing the components of smells and categorising them with a suitable
warning sound and a readout.
I imagine a number of categories
-Smelly cat woman
-Wet dog
-Mouldy pet food
-Inexplicable lingering fish
-Fetid underwear
-Dead mouse
-Nasty toilet
-Dreadful scented candle
and many others as yet undetermined.
You can't manage what you don't measure.
Very similar but not alarming

Ambi Pur changes fragrances
http://www.visit4in...ir-Fresheners/62759 I appear to have been de-sensitised to it - cannot smell it at all now. [po, Jan 16 2009]

Get rid of the cat! Get rid of the cat! |
Surely the cat would get rid of the lingering fish? |
Only if it can explain it. |

I remember reading somewhere about a person with congenitally blocked sinuses who was employed as a bill collector. |
He would douse himself with fishwash and then go sit in the client's office till they paid up. |
Counterattack: release the cats. |

Did the guy get paid by the hour? If the debtor happened to be, say, a fishmonger, then that would be a very lucrative stalemate. |

//houses in the UK were very smelly in winter// |

I have a theory; it's all the milky tea that gets spilt into the carpet. |

Every place I've ever been to in Vancouver smells mouldy to me. (+), but this thing would just ring off the hook there unless individual odors could be deactivated. |

Bathrooms - what are they? |
Bathrooms are chambers which contain either: |
1: A bath tub (Australian usage) |
2: A toilet (American usage) |
This idea should definitely include the "Not enough soap, deodorant, and foot powder" alarm. |

[+] I admit that I am too polite to tell someone yet I want to be told if it is my house that smells. |
I simply provide each visitor with a wooden clothespin to put over their nose. |

Wet Dog is right up there. I guess the devil is in the atomised detail. My problem comes with dirtily washed Tea mugs. It happened and I told them. |
