I once saw a pad that concertinaed (so the paper was long and thin, rather than letter sized). |

but little pieces of paper look less ridiculus
when you try to unfold them after jamming
them in your pocket. i have issues with
even simple maps, but i have big enough
pockets to carry small pieces of paper. |

also, 8 1/2 by 11 paper has always
seemed to be an irritating size anyway. i
like the index cards for notes and jottings.
i admit that my desk is awash with slips of
paper though. |

If the notepad unfolded to contain two large sheets attached at all edges, one could unfold it very quickly by inflating it like a balloon. This approach would be good for maps too. |
