A very simple idea, one that's rather surprising that hasn't been tried before (besides the occcasional solitary improv scene). Instead of writing a full script, write a plotline (Hero A wins Conversation B, but then is beat up by Baddie C, etc.). The actors study the characters intensely -- mannerisms, histories, idiosyncracies, et cetera -- but when the cameras roll, the actors have to act in-character, not recite.

Only certain scenes (fights, parts that are homages to other movies, etc.) are coreographed.

Got lost somewhere beneath the special effects, I guess. [DrCurry, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 21 2004]

Thoroughly Baked I'm afraid, The Big Chill, for example. Possibly you only watch action films, given your plot line?

I think a lot of those "Andy Warhol" movies (the ones directed by Paul Morrisey) were done like this. More recently, "Spinal Tap" and "A Mighty Wind" were made this way. Countless others as well, I'm sure...

Go see 'Spinal Tap,' 'Waiting for Guffman,' 'Best in Show,' and 'A Mighty Wind.' These movies, all unbelievably brilliant, are mostly improvised. All the actors are improvisational beasts. Highly recommended.

phoenix, did you note Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sánchez (II) get writing credits for BPW?

Secrets & Lies, too. In fact, pretty much the whole Mike Leigh shebang.
my face your, Jun 29 2003

       Now, when you say "shebang"...

"Whose Line" for the big screen.
RayfordSteele, Jun 29 2003

my face is right - Mike Leigh never writes a script and often uses ordinary people being essentially "themselves" rather than acting a part. Completely baked therefore, I'm afraid.
