The bed is connected to the fire/smoke alarm system of the building and upon the alarm being triggered, wheels deploy from within the bed frame and the bed makes its way out of the building following wire pathways laid under the carpet/flooring.
Stair climbing/decending would be achieved by the
bed's flexible track. this would be similar to that used on chairs to evacuate wheelchair users from office buildings.
Sensors on the bed would prevent the bed blithly following the wire pathway into a raging conflagration. Should the bed be unable to escape, it will vibrate violently waking the slumbering incumbent.
Double beds would split into two singles and proceed out in the order dertermined at the time of installation.
May be of most use to heavy sleepers or nursing homes/hospitals.

Croissant just for the visuals. And the thought of a false alarm causing a whole family, still dozing, to trundle out in to the pouring rain in the middle of the night and huddle in the driveway. |

Burning the toast would be a useful way for parents to prise sloth-like teenagers from their festering pits. |

//Double beds would split into two singles// leaving st3f flat on his arse in the middle of a burning building, having fallen between two beds. I dare say that would wake me up, though. |

Interesting thought - most beds are too wide to fit through standard doorways horizontally. Would the beds squeeze through, temporarily compress, or just turn on their sides, leaving the stunned occupant lying in the doorway? |

It would happen at the top of the stairs anyway. Would the Economy version make it's way to the nearest window and tip you out? If the base flipped upwards just right you would land with the mattress underneath to cushion the fall. |

Didn't they come up with a wheelchair that can climb / descend stairs recently? I think it used a treadmill like on an army tank or something. You could incorporate that tech. |

I was about to suggest that the beds could negotiate the stairs on eight extensible hydraulic legs. Then I realized this was probably an image captured directly from a [blissmiss] nightmare. |

I got as far as the subtitle and the visual of a mattress getting up and running out of the room on two legs had me in tears. + |

Restraining belts would secure the victim, sorry occupant, to the bed for non-horizontal transport. The beds would get narrower for doorways. Buffers would be added to hospital and nursing home version for coping with the heavy fire doors usually found in these locations. |

As much as I think this is an excellent idea, I still wonder about the impact of false alarms on nights like the other one (6°F, and it's supposedly going to 0°F in the next few days). |
