Secretly scanning shredder

A spying device

There are already shredders that scan documents and scanners that shred documents [links], but in those cases, the scanning is known about, desired by, and performed under the control of the operator.

This is a shredder with a covert scanner in it. It looks like any other shredder. You sneak it into your enemy's office, and then they use it to shred stuff. It scans everything that gets fed in, and exfiltrates the data via Wi-Fi or a more typical bug radio transmitter. Result: You get scans of the very documents your enemy wants to keep secret the most.

Sigh… nothing original. I still think this is a good enough idea to have its own page though.

My 'shredder' is the wood stove in the shop. I find it excellent for reducing sensitive documents to the very smallest fragments. Is there a Secretly Scanning Shredder adaptor kit for which I must scan? (I'll chuck that in the fire, too, once I find it.)

Hard drives are shredded sometimes after being demagnetized. Wonder what kind of device could sneakily read a disconnected hard drive?

So how does this work when you shred multiple sheets at a time?

// Hard drives are shredded sometimes after being demagnetized. Wonder what kind of device could sneakily read a disconnected hard drive? //

I'm already opposed to shredding/crushing of hard drives because it makes them impossible/more difficult to recycle by disassembly, and secure erasing is enough if you trust the hard drive's firmware (which maybe you shouldn't—see below) and degaussing or disassembly and exposure to dust is enough if you don't. (If you've ever tried to unscrew the case screws on a crushed hard drive you'll know what I mean.)

Anyway, just interdict the hard drive, install a transmitter, and reprogram the hard drive's controller [link] to exfiltrate data while it's being used (because after it's removed from the computer it won't have a power source, and because recent data is more useful).

// So how does this work when you shred multiple sheets at a time? //

My thought was that in case of multi-page documents, getting the first page or every Nth page is a lot better than nothing. You could still glean a lot about what your enemy is up to.
