Rose-tinted Spectacles

Or 'Selective-Vision Specs'

A pair of hi-tech specs which filter your view of the world, substituting all those little things that you'd rather not have to look at with something pleasanter.

For example: those garish plastic waving-cat statuettes you see in Chinese shops and takeaways, white people with dreadlocks, bill-boards advertising erotic theatre productions.

The technology would work something like this: while wearing the specs, you look at an example of whatever you want to block out and press a small button on frame. The phototechnology in the glasses takes a few seconds to focus on and record an image of the undesirable object. This image is stored in the specs' internal memory. Then, simply look at something you'd rather see instead and record an image with the glasses. The latter image will substitute the former when the spectacle's sensors lock on to it.

Ta-da! From now on, when I catch sight of a waving-cat statuette while waiting for my chicken satay, it would instantly be replaced by, say, an ornamental china figurine of a lady in tasteful period costume holding a parasol.

Unnovations: Scum-B-Gone Poverty Concealment Helmet £599.99 http://www.zeppotro...ions/scumbgone.html
"It's time to eradicate the poor - As every affluent citizen knows, tramps are the cancer of our streets. Whether you're queueing for the cashpoint, climbing from a cab, or window browsing for diamonds and gold, there's always a beggar selfishly wallowing in his own piss and shit nearby. Now you can be rid of their unsightly poverty with the Scum-B-Gone virtual reality helmet..." - the picture has a helpful mouse-over representation of how the device might work. Sounded vaguely familiar... http://en.wikipedia...es_of_the_Overworld

Yeah, but is he wearing glasses?
blissmiss, Apr 23 2011

       yeah, dark glasses.

Well this sounds a little like a real-world version of Firefox Adblock plug-in for viewing internet sites without seeing advertisements. I suppose that the makers of the specs will regularly publish updated databases of undesired objects, classified by region and also by preference.

       I like the waving cats.

Well [nineteenthly], you can replace all the things you don't want to see with waving cats. :)-

//I like the waving cats// manekenekko. "Money come to me" cat was once considering a 100 metre high one so it would irresistibly attract everyone else's wallet...

       1) in a shop you're saying "I'd like to buy that ornamental china figurine of a lady" while you're pointing at a manekenekko to mutual confusion and unspeakable loss of face.

       2) Unscrupulous restaurateurs finding some way to hack your glasses with a picture of delicious "chicken satay" when in fact your eating a "frog run over by a bus satay".

If I had heads like yours, [8th], I would have thought of the Joo Janta association too.

Perhaps some spectacles which would filter out the concept of filter spectacles and anyone who would like them.

Or possibly just learn to tolerate stuff.

////Or possibly just learn to tolerate stuff.////

Ahh, but this is an ideal invention for people who CAN tolerate stuff, but want to take a break. A bit like going on holiday, you don't have to look all those things that get to you, every day.

Or... alternatively... you could just go on holiday...

... I'm tempted to fishbone my own idea now.
DeniqueCoelum, Apr 28 2011

//holiday// For a vacation you'd have to program it for more stuff, and reprogram it for stuff that bugs you at home but doesn't somewhere else.
