Half a croissant, on a plate, with a sign in front of it saying '50c'

This would work fine, except in terms of success.

Come night time bring the domesticated rooster inside.

Set up a projector behind the rooster which is set to start up via a time switch.

At your desired time, the projector will project a short animated movie of a sunrise upon the wall.

The rooster will go off in all its glory. If you want to have a lie in set the projector to a later time.

Open curtains put rooster back outside.

Actually... http://www.earthsky...r/life.html#rooster
It's unclear that projecting an image of sunrise would do the trick, but it's possible playing a recording of another rooster crowing would work. Either that or a carefully metered melatonin drip. [egnor, Oct 05 2004]

How does the snooze feature work?, and would you increase the number of roosters for the hard of hearing?

One of the common "talking time" chips has a "rooster crowing" alarm clock. I don't know if Radio Shack still sells the same clock, but if you want to wake up to an annoying electronic rooster you might go there and see.

I've used a rooster sound file in my clock radio CD, but haven't tried a real rooster. Yet.
If the rooster isn't awake, the projector would do the trick. As [egnor] said with the [link], they work more on a biological clock. I stayed on a farm one summer, and those blasted roosters didn't seem to sleep much at all. You get used to it after a while, which isn't good if that's your alarm clock (alarm cock?).
On the other hand, I would almost certainly wake up if there were a rooster crowing in the bedroom.

Yet another example of nature being replaced by technology, give me the rooster anytime.

Add a hen for a breakfast egg.

How about the rooster pouncing upon your face as you sleep, digging it's sharp talons into your flesh.

What would you smash on the rooster to make it quiet for five minutes?

We went to a farm for our summer hol's and the roosters were always awake and crowing way before sun up
