Stiff neck, tired eyes from staring at screen, legs going to sleep, mouse hand cramps, brain screaming for attention, coffee making you jittery, frustrated with work, back pains from sitting, sluggish from inactivity. Sound like you? Sounds like me.
Rock climbing is brilliant exercise. You use all
muscle groups, have to concentrate, solve problems and you reach a zen-like state where only the rock exists.
I would like an office building with walls made from injection moulded concrete or similar, made to look and feel like natural rock with overhangs, outcrops and plenty of hand and footholds. Then, just before my brain dribbles out of my ear and my right hand locks into a "left-click" rictus, I can slip on my climbing shoes, take a deep breath and rock climb over to the coffee break room or the loo or just over to a colleague. <Swinging from ceiling> "Here's that report you asked for"<Swinging from ceiling>.
I could scramble the walls for ten minutes or so and return to my work refreshed, relaxed, tranquil, energised and therefore more productive.
This would also give the office space a lovely cavey appearance and improve the physical and mental fitness of the staff. Those who wish to have ropes can have ropes but free climbing is permitted.

I see a problem - ever tried using a keyboard after climbing for any length of time? |
[custardlove]
If you're mainly hanging from your fingers and they're hurting, you're doing it wrong. That's when you get tendonitis etc. A short burst of low level scrambling isn't going to do this and will relax and stretch your fingers and hands that have been held in a typing/clicking position for most of the day. I don't intend this to be used for any significant length of time, just for a quick breather. |

Fair enough. I only feel this way after foolishly trying the evil 7B+ "features only" route at my local wall |

Brain beginning to dribble aabbooooouuuuuuutt....NOW! |
(face contorts in pain as hand contracts into claw with forefinger twitching madly). |

<Free climbing right over [squeak]'s head> Here. Here's your croissant... </Fcrosh> |

Ugh [K_sra], were you carrying that in your MOUTH? |

<rechalks hands and smiles sheepishly> |

//and therefore more productive// |

I'm sure I would be less productive, given a choice between work or climbing I'll choose climbing every time. |

A 4 free solo? With only a stapler? You wild man! |

The guy who taught me how to make pasta in the
basement of the Italian deli I worked in one spring break:
"OK, now that its mixing, you have to climb across these
shelves down to the cases of soda, pinch grip the floor
joists across to the flour sacks, and chimney climb back
between the walk-in cooler and the wall, then drop down
by the machine and the pasta should be ready to go. If
not, I'll show you the short route for a few extra
minutes." |
Cool! Then I could fall off cliffs at work too! + |
I'm sure i'd like climbing if i wasn't afraid of heights. Caving would fit the bill nicely but might be a bit messy for offices. |
I thought this idea was going to be about offices where you were going to have to fight for the photocopier.... |
...Six minutes...(huff)...climbing the...(puff)...corporate ladder. Too tired....zzzzzzz. |
I can't help but feel this would be improved with a deep swimming pool at the bottom to dive into... |
Nonono. The "bottom" is the office. The inside of the office. Cavey like not cliffy like. |
I would certainly choose that work environment, on the stipulation that chalk was absolutely banned, on penalty of Barney. |
I don't climb any more, but I love to freedive. Is this available in an underwater model ? |
Yep. I suppose the rocky theme could be continued outside. The reasons I wanted it inside though are a) the climbing is only meant for during short breaks b) if you're inside, you don't have as far to fall if you erm...fall c) would be cool to work in a cave d) no interior designers necessary. "No. No harmonising pastel panels, I said rocks. Just rocks." |

I think [normzone]'s free diving option would be a little difficult to implement. You would basically have to have a swimming pool in the office which would take loads of space and mean that everyone would have to enter the office through one of those disinfectant footbaths whereas with the original idea you only have to make the walls lumpy. You would also either have to strip off or change into a swimming cossie and then back again once you were done swimming. Not v. good for when taking quick, 5-10 minute breaks. |

[benfrost] hey, don't let me stop you. |
