The basic arena is a circular sandpit, 15m diameter, featuring thick plexiglass walls and ceiling to keep spectators from participating or being participated upon.
The "rocks" are spheres, ranging from 1" to 24" in diameter; composition ranging from hollow aluminum to solid tungsten, visually indistinguishable
from each other. Over one hundred of these are scattered on the sand at the beginning of the match.
The contestants wear light body and head armour, equipped with pressure sensors and - purpose mostly derivative of "Ender's Game" - artificial electro-muscles at the joints to disable the relevant anatomy of a well-hit player, temporarily. The match starts with an opponent at either end.
Direct contact (punch, kick, headbutt, etc.) results in a penalty call.
Larger arenas can host more than two people for mixed doubles, team and free-for-alls.

So, if I get my hands on a 3" dia tungsten sphere, the
match is pretty much over for the guy beating me over the
head with an aluminum party ball, is that the idea? |
|
|
well, it would be if he'd somehow managed to lose track of the other 98 rocks. An aluminium beachball sounds more like a defensive weapon or screen. |
|
|
Think strategy: pretending to throw what could be a 3" tungsten baseball means the opponent ducks early, allowing you to change vector and nail him dead on since it's only a hollow iron sphere. Etc. |

Remembering which identical sphere is the partyball and which the Titanic anchor is part of the game. |

This sounds immensely fun. I doubt the Olympic Committee
will go in for an obvious bloodsport, but I'm gonna order
me a
few yards of sand and some 1/2" Lexan. My children will
grow up playing this game. |
|
|
Logically, not all of them will grow up. Some
will inevitably be eliminated. |

The ones that survive will no doubt be the
ones that most resemble their male parent,
i.e. having rremarkably thick skulls,
anthropoid physique, and an innate resiliance
to being struck repeatedly on the head by
heavy metal objects moving at speed. |

That's the notion, yes. Ideally, they will also have their
mother's cunning and ability to zero in on weak points. |

I thought this was going to be a version of
rock/paper/scissors for the hard of thinking. |
