Why only rock backward and forward in one plane when you can rock in all directions? This rocking chair’s rocker, like a large salad bowl, is the bottom 1/10th of a sphere made in shiny aluminum or lacquered hickory.

Have fun rocking diagonally, sideways or spinning “'round the world”. While you enjoy the ride of your life, your babe in arms will fall asleep in minutes flat.

       Or throw up.

In a normal rocking chair, there is space between the runners to permit access to the seat. The bowl would have to extend beyond the edge of the seat to prevent tipping, so how would you get into the thing?

You get something like this - different principle, same action - in kiddies' playgrounds, miniature sit-upon rabbits/motorcycles mounted on a large coil spring. The problem is returning to the equilibrium position. If the child is too heavy to overcome the return force of the spring, the poor kid is left dangling with its nose inches from the ground.

Funny, I've never had a "boll" salad. Are they crunchy?
IVnick8or, Oct 11 2002

A salad boll is a large receptacle for serving salad (or mounting rocking chairs) fashioned from the seeds of a hickory tree.

Dang! I was thinkin' maybe it was like them boll weevils we gots down a-here's in Georgia...thought they's make a dandy, crunchy salad.

Thanks guys. Babies in cradles do quite well rocking sideways. To mount, you would just step into the "bowl". Like a conventional rocker, you would not be left hanging, as your center of gravity is below the sphere's center.

Oh. I thought you were proposing an actual Chair. A name chair, at a prestigious university. The Farmer John Chair of Rock and Roll. And you would give ten million dollars to the University of Montana at Missoula for the purpose of appointing myself, or some other qualified applicant, to this position. And then I, or some other, would become the first Farmer John Professor of Rock and Roll. But this? <hurls forlorn furry body off cliff>

Don't get me wrong, I like rocking chairs, especially novel ones, but I have visions of stepping into the bowl and having the backrest leap up and smack me in the teeth garden-rake stylee. Also, rocking side to side in a cradle is different to wildly spinning around while going back, forth and diagonally and side to side. The bowl could come in handy as a splash tray; "Sick - as a dog, now..." Plenty of potential for sneaking up and administering an impromptu Bucking Bronco ride. Yes, the more I think about it the more I like it. Croissant (in a bowl).

Swivel rockers are Baked. Shouldn't be difficult to combine them with papasan chairs if someone hasn't already.

(Later) As suspected, papasan swivel rockers are Baked. (link)

[phoenix] Since your examples don't rock from side to side, it's like saying a polite Japanese is the same as a wildly swaying drunk.
FarmerJohn, Oct 11 2002

That spring-mount concept isn't going to work; in order to be comfortable, the rocker needs to travel in some sort of cycloidic travel-path, otherwise it's just not relaxing. Shaking back-and-forth about a fixed point on the floor isn't fun.

A workable alternative to the bowl would be bi-axial. Customary runners for fore-aft, and a four-bar mechanism for the side-to-side.

I've met polite drunken japanese rockers.
