A circular platform is suspended, exactly parallel to the
ground, above a fairly large blank canvas. Upon the
platform rest many paint-filled balls of various colors,
arranged in a pattern or design. These balls are similar
to paintballs, but of varying sizes, and more fragile.
They're solid
enough that they won't leak or burst by
rolling into each other, but delicate enough that they
won't survive a trip several feet to the floor.
The entire installation is placed in an area known for
relatively frequent earthquakes (indoors somewhere,
and away from traffic, wind, and other sources of
extraneous vibration). One piece may take years of
preparation, and only seconds to produce.
