Reproductive Robot

Robot that can copy itself using off the shelf parts

The most difficult part of a self-copying robot is the chip. The goal is not a robot producing another one every day, but rather in couple of years. Therefore, it may be possible to have a small production line in the belly of the robot that does PVD, CVD, and etching and maybe producing one chip in 6 months.

Of course the process requires big machines and vacuum chambers, so one robot probably will not be enough. Then comes the concept of "robot sex". Six to ten robots will have "sex" or combine in series in order to produce the chips. The robots will have different "genders", like the "vacuum chamber", the "plasma robot", the "etcher", etc. Once these ten get together, they can produce the chips necessary to create a new member.

These robots probably will not look quite like humans so they will not be able to blend in. Then again, you can make them look cute or nice, or monstrous; whatever you want the new species to look like. Personally would like them to look like T-X but in larger size.

I am human and I can't blend in, so don't worry about it.

I find myself strangely attracted to that boxy looking one over in the corner... Her LED lights have been winking at me all night!

"...WHO'S YO DADDY! WHO'S YO DADDY!..."

Dang, she just switched off... maybe I should have led with "...Blink here often?..."

<sigh> ...looks like it's going to be another lonely night with a can of WD-40 and Popular Mechanics.

[+] Now, where did I put that towel?

If off-the-shelf parts include things like Arduinos, this could be simplified significantly.

Erm, would it not be best to follow the insects example and have a queen, who knocks out the CPU's and drones to do the donkey work?

Actually Bjork might have beaten you to it...as I just remembered.

I can't be bothered to do a linky, so just go "Bjork All is full of love" on youtube. It's so-so cute.
