The sounds of science.

This device consists of 11 chimes - 10 (with a value from 0 through 9) surrounding a central 'activator' chime. Whenever a numbered chime strikes the activator chime the value of the number chime is stored (or dialed or displayed or whatever). If used for dialing purposes, emergency numbers (such as 911 in most US states) would be ignored.

Inspired by [hippo]'s Dodgy Silent Chimes and designed specifically for [beauxeault]'s Global Zen MIDI, so props to them.

For making me think about wind chimes despite having the sense not to. [phoenix, Aug 13 2001, last modified Oct 05 2004]

The fishbone for the idea is neutralized by the croissant for the sub-title.

Assign patterns of chiming to a number (ex. 1, 3, 4, 6, 3 ---> 5) to increase randomness some. (note: I am not sure how to prove this, but it seems it should work)
