I see The Hawkster around Cambridge from time to time, and last saw
him at Addenbrooke's Hospital a couple of weeks ago; this plus
Mustardface's idea (linky) has inspired one of MaxCo's greatest products.
Your very own RC Hawking comes partly assembled, requiring only 15-
20 minutes of work with
a spanner and allen key (supplied), the
installation of two car batteries, (plus three AA batteries in the
remote), and the connection of the inconspicuous antenna, disguised in
the frame of the glasses.
With a battery lifetime of over two hours, a remote control range of
200 metres, and a full repertoire of remotely-selectable phrases,
MaxCo's life-size RC Hawking is available now for pre-order.

Let's hope it's built better than this.

When the cast of Jackass purchase ten of these and freak out an entire small town, probably causing death, I hope I can be around to get that look on your face. Will it be accomplishment? Defeat? Ahh.. the suspense! |
How big would this be? Life-size? I suggest having it sync up
to your Mac, so you can program it to say phrases using the
computer's built-in vocoder. |
Kidnap him. And at the next conference, use RC Hawking and a mic, hide behind the curtain and say that there was an accident at the LHC and he has been miniaturized. |
//How big would this be? Life-size?// Exactly, down to the
last hair. In beta-tests, it seemed to work well enough to
confuse most people. For example, see my second link. In
this shot, the RC Hawking is being operated by Ricey Bob,
who is wearing a crotch-mounted transmitter and is standing
over to the left in the background. We also used this
opportunity to field-test of our Miss Meeting-Filler (shown on
right). |

(Head in hands, misread Hawking,) |

Do you know, I've been living and working in Cambridge for nearly ten years and I've yet to see the guy once. If I ever do see him, there's a certain mischievous side of my personality which is just dying to wheel-clamp him. |
Blimey - it's unnerving living this close to another halfbaker.
Wherejyou work? |
For a small software firm called RealVNC, in the BBC building on Hills Road, by the war memorial. |
I'm on the Addenbrooke's site just up the road. Spooky.
Maybe one day we should have a Cambridge HBfest. We
could invite The Hawkster. |
Just a thought... RC Hawking drone to knock out terrorist king
pins, but, it would probably only work once... |
With Cambridge here, maybe Stephen is an HB. If so, we should
give him his own grin icon for a Hawking vote. |
I'd be scared of the radiation. |
Here's my advance order a small quantity of 1:3 or 1:4 scale versions, say a dozen, if this helps you decide to go to production. |
Tatterdem - you're on. We're making you a special batch of
12 (plus one free - a baker's dozen) at 1:4 scale. |
We had a few problems with this, since 1:4 scale puts the RC
Hawking at just under 20ft tall, but I just got the OK from our
structural engineers. Is your invoice address the same as the
delivery address? |
Yes, the information is correct. I'm surprised to learn that Professor Hawking is nearly 80 feet tall. Admittedly I have not met him or seen him in person. |
Hey wait a sec, how do we know Stephen Hawking isn't *already* completely remote controlled? |
...or an halfbaker already? |
Who is RC Hawking? I assume it has something to do with Stephen Hawking, but why do you call him RC? What is MaxCo? A fantasy? |
This is a very user-unfriendly entry. I assume it is a sort of inside joke not meant to be understood by strangers. For that reason alone Im voting against it. |
Hawking is far more likely to be RC than on the HB, I think he'd say something like 'orders of magnitude', whatever that means. |
RC is an abbreviation that is generally taken to mean |Remote Controlled or Radio Controlled. Much of what you see here on the HB is fantasy. |
I could see S. Hawking and M. Hervonen together in the 2011 season so |
(Because it would be a triumph of the human spirit you mean spirited, full body paralysis is a joke, bastards.) |
I don't think it's mean spirited. He's amazing! How cool to have a
Stephen Hawking action figure. His condition is not a joke. He's a
wonderful enigma. We love him! |
To bits. I also love Richard Feynman and want to have his
babies, and he's in an even worse condition. As is Asimov,
and JE Gordon. Come to think of it, being one of my heroes
is clearly a bit of a curse. |
at least yours are alive. |
hmmm yes <doh!> forgot Feynman died for some reason. |
That's one seriously unlucky Star Sign ... |
Oh, STEPHEN Hawking! I thought this was something related
to falconry. |
