Bitter, high in caffeine, but portioned, packaged, and vended as per normal candy industry procedure. Saves millions in production. Market as 'hardcore' or 'Xtreme' or some such.

Lindt Chocolatier http://www.lindt.com/
Not a lot of choice, but pretty big boxes. As of 2Jun01, their largest <500g> is 30.66$ with shipping. [StarChaser, Jun 01 2001, last modified Oct 05 2004]

And if you don't mind a few days wait, Lindt chocolate in Switzerland mail orders. For cheap, too. A package that probably would have cost 100$ from Godiva cost me 30$ plus shipping, because of the exchange rate between Swiss francs and US$.

Gave it to my fiancee and got pounced. Woohoo!

[Starchaser] Thanks, I'll remember that. I do rather like my creature comforts.

[Peter] The reason you don't like Hershey's chocolate is because you didn't spend your childhood in the US (or at least, I don't think you did). Hershey's make their chocolate with sour milk and it's a taste you have to acquire in childhood.
Give me "Lindt 70%" in the Black and White wrapper any day.

[Peter] And soap. I think Godiva chocolate tastes pretty foul too - nothing like as good as Lindt.

In terms of taste chocolate seems to be a European speciality which is strange considering that we have to get the most important ingredient from the other side of the world. As for the UK I reccommend Cadbury's Milk and Bournville Dark. They're actually made in the same place at Cadbury's in Birminghham and if you're ever up that way, you can visit the factory to see how it's made. We don't seem to have got a handle on white choccy yet but then again that's not really chocolate is it.

I think Cadbury's is usually available here (US) around Easter, but not this year. Now that I think about it, I think it's an East Coast thing.

Has anyone tried the various mexican chocolate and chilli mixtures that I've heard about?

       Sounds quite interesting.
