Sometimes I have to work at a crowded table where there's simply not enough room to set down my cup of tea or coffee. To provide a solution for this problem I have devised the Portable Table Top Edge Extender.

This is a simple item that consists of a thin metal plate that is placed at the edge of the table, extending its width by a sufficient amount to faciliate the placing on it of a coffee cup. The instability problem created by the resulting overhang is solved by the provision of a height adjustable telescopic leg. This supports the device from the floor upwards.

Portable Table Top Edge Extender folds down to a convenient size for easy transport and storage.

It's best to view the outlne drawing in the tumblr link to get a better understanding of the idea.

I forsee a battle of standards similar to VHS / Betamax, between people who use the Portable Table Top Edge Extender to hold their coffee cup, and people who use Coffee Cups With Built In Telescopic Foot Stands.

The main advantage of the Coffee Cup With Built In Telescopic Foot Stand is that you don't have to carry two separate parts; the coffee cup merely stands on the floor but at a convenient height to reach while sitting at the table. On the other hand the Portable Table Top Edge Extender does have the advantage that it is easier to drink to the bottom of the coffee cup if there is not a permanently attached 3 foot long pole sticking out of the bottom of the cup.

Meanwhile people who try to use both find that they end up with coffee stains on the ceiling.

After a very short period of time working at a table or desk with the Portable Table Top Edge Extender (PTTEE) fitted, the PTTEE itself will become cluttered with Post-It notes, spare pairs of glasses, USB cables and other desk detritus. The user will then have to fit a second PTTEE to support their beverage. In turn, this too will become cluttered, and so on until the entire circumference of the table is packed with PTTEEs. At this point it will be necessary to start attaching subsequent PTTEEs to the first ring of PTTEEs in order to further extend your work surface.

I agree with hippo. Clutter expands to occupy the space available to it (a bit like London). My favoured solution to the problem would be the Neck Brace with Cup Holder. Good for posture & hands-free beverage control.

[hippo] it would be better to cut to the chase and daisy chain the second on to the first surely?

Yet another reason why the Coffee Cup With Built In Telescopic Foot Stand is a superior solution.

Those clip on extenders in the links are simply sad and unworthy. They will also be prone to sag-failure. The sturdy adjustable telescopic leg on my table edge extender ensures complete stability by comparison. A vulnerable detailed 3D wax replica of The Madonna and Child could be placed underneath it with zero risk of a large mug of scalding hot coffee ever descending on it from above. (as shown in dramatic forthcoming advert) Try doing that with a clip on!

That heavy mug would be child's play to my table edge extender. In fact the one shown in the illustration is heavier again as it's made from depleted uranium. I forgot to point that out in the drawing notes.

Table- top gamers have usually solved this problem with a large sheet of hardboard which overhangs the table on all sides. Your mug of coffee can then be defended by painted pewter figurines.

You had me at depleted uranium.
