A popcorn kernel pops because the fast buildup of steam in its starchy interior finally splits the hard hull (pericarp). These hull fibers are separated and processed today as gluten meal. If peas and beans could be covered with a hard coat of this gluten, the result would be legumes for popping. Before
coating, the moisture content would have to be adjusted to about 14% as in popcorn. Also some nuts and berries could be treated this way. The food could be popped in a pan or microwave oven or sold already popped to pop into your mouth. Umm, pop-blueberries!

I like peas, but I find that they can give rise to ...er ... intestinal gas buildup. This idea sounds more like the basis for a Weapon of Mass Asphyxiation, but as long as there are no lightning rods involved, I'll bestow a cautious croissant, because I rather like the idea of a popped blueberry. |

FarmerJohn: Thanks for the link ... I have explored this field on my own account in the past, to my great amusement. Thankfully, no injuries resulted. |

Yummy idea! I'd be the first to try these. Don't forget, dieters, that popped food would contain far fewer calories than unpopped food, due to the energy expelled during the popping. :) |

Will nuts pop, you think? I think grains would work best, then maybe dehydrated fruits and veggies, but there's really only one way to find out. Somebody try this and tell us how it goes! |

Hmm, I wonder what popped sesame (or other seeds) would be like? I love sesame seeds. They'd most likely be smaller than popped corn, and have that toasted sesame seed smell. Mmmmmm..... |

Having tried pea chips (crisps?) some time ago, I suspect this would taste quite good. |

I stand by the dispenser
in its defense, or
in order to give it a pump. |

Legumes won't get butter
and fruits are another
I guess I'll be forced to dump. |

Peas, peas, the snack to pop. When you start to pop, you just cant stop. Shop'em till you drop and the better youll feel. So lets pop peas for every meal. |

I wonder if baby corn will pop. I'd like to eat something that resembles popcorn, but in a strange, new, tiny size. |

has anyone tried popping them as they are (I mean when dried though)? |
