Pooper Snooper

My boss asked me to post his idea. He has 2 large golden retrievers and a big back yard. He hates having to walk everywhere looking for their care packages. How about a pooper scooper with a large viewfinder attached to the arm. If some type of technology exists, kinda like infrared (infrabrown?) vision, that could sniff out (sorry about that) large deposits, the yard could be scanned and cleaned much more quickly and easily. I am not one for animal testing but maybe if we tested out on prisoners feeding them something that would show up later with the device it might be safe to use on our pets.

Yes! How 'bout a long tube with a fan that delivers the air from down below to the vicinity of your nose?

You steer it by smell and home in on the said deposits.

Having a large Golden myself I have to say that the deposits are not really all that hard to locate as they are large and there are not many other things that look like them, also the color contrasts well with the typical green of the lawn so im not sure I understand the value of this.

[DrCurry] and all, I was refering to the comment about prisoners. The gross-out humor tag of [marked–for-deletion] seemed best to fit. [bowersst], be a sport and remove it will you?
zeno, Feb 26 2006

I disagree. The mfd isn't right. This isn't gross out humor. If I have an objection it's to the hand-wavy technology that enables the proposed device.

That dog feces dry out and lose much of their odor fairly quickly means that the detection system needs to be widely adaptable and to an extent that is arguably magical.

I am new and I don't want to offend but I'd rather not delete this straight away. I read grosser posts and I think this is passable (damn, I did it again!). Seriously, reviews are coming up soon and, in addition to the auto-pickeruper/fertilizer thing someone wrote about a couple years back, I think this is a really good idea for a new tool.

I can hardly believe that I was not clear enough. I will try once more and then I will leave it alone in anger. I always thought the halfbakery was a place of mutual respect. I thought suggesting things of a cruel nature would not be tolerated.

//I am not one for animal testing but maybe if we tested out on prisoners\\

This statement is below all moral standards. It makes me very angry to see it here.

Do halfbakers think this should be tolerated?

<reaches for pocket retractable bargepole. Bravely puts it away again>

Yes, //tested out on prisoners// offended me too, mostly because it doesn't improve the idea and just says 'let's do something nasty to people who I think deserve it'.

Tolerated? Hmm. Tricky. There is some potentially offensive stuff in the 'bakery. I normally just refrain from voting or commenting if I'm overly offended, and leave it up to others to decide for themselves. But that's just me.

The prisoner thing was actually a joke in bad taste. To imagine that someone would do something dangerous to a human before trying the same thing on an animal. I now there are people like that out there and I should not have included the joke. Can I delete the offending line or add a :) ????
bowersst, Feb 26 2006

Feel free to edit. It's why you can.

Also, if you want to do a little research and redraft the fifth sentence so that it sounds a little less like "I don't know if this can be done but wouldn't it be neat if it could", it would vastly improve the idea.
hidden truths, Feb 26 2006

I expect that you could do something like this with infrared detection. I know from having dogs in snowy environments that their deposits tend to be somewhat warmer than the surroundings until they fully decompose. Probably bacterial action. So I expect that IR goggles would be very helpful.

Alternatively, try looking for it barefoot. Experience has taught me that this is a very quick way to locate dog poo.

Pretty sharp, I should imagine.

I suspect you could let the little robot roam around randomly and find it the same way your shoes do in the dark.
