Frequently, there are complaints that the HB becomes too much about the personalities and not enough about the ideas. The emphasis on personalities manifests as persecution of newcomers, guaranteed croissants for old hands, "social club" conversations and so on.

I propose that users be able to post ideas using other usernames. This would allow newcomers to cloak themselves in the radiant mantle of established Bakers. It would allow me to post my "compressed helium balloon" idea under the name [Freefall]. It would serve to dilute out social conversations because of general identity confusion. All and all, this idea is what the HB needs to really make it great!

       I think that's a good idea - though I think people would potentially work in clandestine ways to identify themselves somehow.

       Who's posting ideas under my name? The nerve!

       I think [Zimmy]'s loosing his mind

       No big loss, I guess.

       I think [Zimmy]'s losing his mind. Really.

       Funny you should ask, [longshot]. Actually I posted it under bung's name as an experiment.

As you can see from the above simulated situation, ladies and gentlemen, this is a terrible idea.

       This is getting messy. I'm having a hard time keeping track of all the annos I posted under everyone's username.
Machiavelli, Apr 06 2005

       This is funny stuff. But seriously, I like getting to know the people that post ideas or annotate.

       And as for people bunning [farmerjohn] ideas because they are from [farmerjohn], I don't think that happens. I think this crowd is more mature than that.

       Social club conversations? Has to do with group forming and bonding, nothing wrong with it, it's just like in life, get over it.

       Persecution of newcomers. I've seen [theroberts] getting a verbal beating just because he did not come across as a very cool dude. I happened to like his honesty. A bad thing happened there and I blame some halfbakers. Still, we can't all get along, so there you have it: it's just life.

       I like that about the halfbakery, I get angry with people I don't even know, I like people I don't even know, they make me laugh frequently and one or two times I was actually saddened by what people I don't know annotated or by what happened to people I don't know.

       I wouldn't make any offensive remarks on ideas by [contracts] because I think he's the kind of person who would not like that. I would do it to [unabubba] because i think he's the kind of person who would laugh. I might be wrong. But I like that there are personalities here. And I also note that whenever people are annotating about stuff that is not directly in reponse to the idea they apologise for going "off topic". I don't agree that the ideas are getting less important than the personalities.

       Something tells me I could have said as much without so many words.
zeno, Apr 06 2005

       Yeah, you could have just boned the idea, [zeno]. But I agree with pretty much most of what you said.
Machiavelli, Apr 06 2005

       I wouldn't keep coming back if it wasn't for the 'bakers. Well, I would actually, but the sentiment's there.

       What zeno said, especially the third sentence.

       //persecution of newcomers//
Persecution of idiots or people who don't bother to read the rules is all I see. There's an awful lot of what I would consider newcomers driving along the ideas in the 'bakery at the moment. I don't see much persecution.

//guaranteed croissants for old hands//

Really? Where's mine then eh? Come on, cough up!

//"social club" conversations//

I was just chatting in the lounge with po and DrCurry and angel about this the other day over a nice cup of Earl Grey and a digestive biscuit and we came to the conclusion that it was a myth. <cough>

       Funny thing is, they're still in the lounge. That tea must be getting cold. I'll make some fresh.
