Inspired by those cake sculptures that look like
everything
from a bowling trophy to a tophat, food artists would re-
shape all sorts of other foods to make a mystery buffet
where
you wouldn't know what it was until you took a bite.
Everything would be well prepared and tasty, but it
would
be
interesting to watch your brain's confusion and it bit into
a
french fry that was actually made of hamburger.
A particularly surreal (if pointless) entry would be a
burrito with all the standard ingredients only swapped.
The meat is cheese, the cheese is rice, the rice is the
tortilla and the meat is tomatoes and avocados or a
hamburger with everything swapped. Bun = patty, cheese
= bun, patty = lettuce, pickles and tomatoes.

Just don't include tree nuts, peanuts, gluten, dairy,
oats, soy... |
Wow, didn't realize how long that food sensitivity list
has gotten. |
Yea, that'd be a factor. Although I suppose you could
just put a disclaimer at the beginning listing the
ingredients. |
I'm giving this a bone, but you'll have to bite into it to find out what it really is. |
I don't think it's THAT common. Most people will be fine with almost any food. Also you can have little cards for each item saying what it doesn't have from the list. |
There was a trend way back (1600s? 1800s?) where food was disguised as objects or other foods, especially for kings, but I'm not sufficiently informed to find and link it. |
//I'm giving this a bone, but you'll have to bite into it to

(Takes a bite) Heeeyy, this is a bun! V you kooky funster you! |
So far, not a single person has thought to eat a
side-plate, napkin, menu or pepper mill. |
Drives the chef crazy. Work it out, people!! Not
what it seems buffet. Took me hours to make
that "pepper mill" hedgehog slice. |
+ I like this idea but can you make a stuffed turkey
look like toasted marshmallows? |
I can't, I can barely cook a hamburger to look like a
hamburger, but there's talent out there that can work
visual magic in the kitchen. Just look at those cake
artists. |
I have 3 people in my near-immediate family who
can't have lactose. Two who can't have gluten or
they puke for two days. One who can't have any dairy
at all or gluten or oats. I know of at least one kid in
the school who can't be in the same room as a
peanut, and 4 or 5 with soy allergies. |
Those pork chops are kosher but the Gefilte fish is not |
[not only but also], now THAT'S clever! A pile of napkins in
particular. |
Yes and the "food" can be convincing hard resin replicas. |
Now who will be the first to try biting into the table? |
Pinned on the wall of the local bakery I used to go to, there was an opinion piece about some food snob or critic who was at a formal meal with full service etc. and they deliberately spread their butter onto the napkin as a kind of performance protest about the crustless chorleywood bread that was served. |
When my son was a toddler I had to get him to stop biting the
end table and licking the closet door. When you're a parent
you say sentences you'd never expect to hear in any rational
world. |
//deliberately spread their butter onto the napkin as

chorleywood bread that was served// |
Heroic, I'd put him up there with Martin Luther King
and Gandhi. How'd his brave crusade work out for
him? Now I'm not suggesting a national holiday in his
honor, but a few statues in major cities at least no? |
What greater honour could there be than a yellowing photocopy pinned to the wall of Gibbon's bakery shop? Your priorities are odd. |
A fellow calling himself MehGyver has a blog which made me laugh the other day. It read; |
"The year is 2030. Bakery art is so realistic, literally anything could be cake. The uncertainty has gripped the world. In fear I go to hug my wife for comfort... |
I video game almost none at all, but I know that reference. Well done, my friend. |
Incredible link Kodabar. (and welcome back) |
And xan, your link makes me think this really needs to be
done. |
It could just be something restaurants that cater events to
offer as a fun side table. Seems like everybody would want to
try it. I would. |
You build it and we will come. |
Unfortunately I'm a horrible cook. Although I've been
known to make stuff where people say "What the hell
is that?". |
Found a pretty good one. (link) |
